Carroll girls split meets

The Carroll girls swim team opened its season against Northwestern, losing to the Tigers 115.5-69.5. They bounced back Monday night, defeating Attica 123-39.

Against Northwestern, Carroll was led by seniors Olivia Wenisch, Hannah Brewster and Emily Fritz. They were on the first place 200-free and 400-free relay teams. Wenisch also won first place in the 50-free event.

Sophomore Lauren Nesbitt took first place in the 100 back and was a member of the first place 400-free relay team. Freshman Bridget Peden was on the first place 200 free relay team.

Other strong first year swimmers were Caitlin Pickens, Jackie Tussinger and Ellen Clark.

According to coach Roger Nelson, Mikayla Keller is his most improved swimmer from last year’s team. Even though she had a false start in the 100-free, she improved 8 seconds from her best time last year.

Against Attica, the Carroll team won 10 of 12 events. Individual winners were Stephanie Strawcutter, 200 free; Lauren Nesbitt, 200 IM and 500 free; Hannah Brewster, diving; Emily Fritz, 100 fly; Olivia Wenisch, 100 free; and Shelby Spray, 100 back. All three relay teams won including 200 medley (Nesbitt, C. Pickens, Fritz and Wenisch), 200 free (H. Brewster, Fritz, Peden, Wenisch) and 400 free (Samantha Pickens, Spray, Strawcutter, Nesbitt).

Their next meet will be at home Tuesday against Maconaquah.
