Comet staff report

The United States Postal Service is reminding those who wish to send letters and packages to service members that they will not be delivered if addressed to “Any Service Member” (or similar wording).

Beginning in 2001, the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) began refusing to accept “Any Service Member” mail, citing security concerns. When possible, the Postal Service will return refused mail to the sender.

The DOD has a website for supporting our armed forces located at http://www.ourmilitary. mil/. The website lists organizations that can be contacted if someone wishes to send messages of support to service members.

Those who wish to send well wishes to wounded service members may want to contact Soldiers’ Angels, http://www.soldiersangels.org or the Red Cross, http://www.redcross. org/. These groups collect the correspondence, screen, and deliver the well wishes.
