Smoke consumes downtown Delphi
Fire destroys Office Tavern building Smoke consumes downtown Delphi By Debbie Lowe A fire broke out in the upstairs apartments in the building that houses the Office Tavern and the law office of the late Mahlon Kerlin at 212 S. Washington St., south of the courthouse in Delphi, Wednesday at approximately 10:30 a.m. Traffic from SR25 was routed around the area, and later directed around the town, as firefighters from all Carroll County departments, as well as Tippecanoe County, worked to extinguish the blaze. It was reported by a driver that smoke was very thick at the east edge of Delphi on SR25 at 12:15 p.m. While fire trucks clogged Washington and Main streets, thick heavy smoke curled in waves against buildings on the east side of Washington St. Duke Energy arrived on the scene to shut the power down in the area at approximately 12 noon. The cause of the blaze is undetermined, according to Delphi-Tri Township Fire Chief Dennis Randle Wednesday afternoon. The Delphi Police Department and Carroll County Sheriff’s Department urged motorists to avoid the area. Traffic on SR25 from Logansport was routed to SR218 to SR75 and traffic from the south was routed at US421 to SR18 to Flora. Due to the fire, the Delphi United Methodist Church has set up a shelter for displaced families from downtown apartments.
