Leo D. Bowman
Leo D. Bowman, 89, formerly of Deer Creek and Flora, died at 6:15 a.m. Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at McKinney House in Logansport where he had resided for two years.
Born Feb. 15, 1920, in Carroll County, he was the son of Tom and Emma Bowman. His marriage was on April 25, 1943, in Deer Creek, to Mary Margaret Fouts, who survives.
Mr. Bowman was a 1938 graduate of Carrollton High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture from Purdue University in 1947.
A World War II veteran, he served four and a half years in the U.S. Army. He was stationed at Camp Roberts, Calif. for three years, then stationed at Sheppard Field, Texas, Morningside College, Sioux City, Iowa, Camp McCoy, Wis., and O.C.S. at Fort Benning, Ga., where he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. He was then stationed at Camp Gordon, Ga., then to Monterey, Calif., and from there to Manila, Philippines, then home via the Panama Canal to New York City and onto Camp Atterbury in Indiana. He was discharged in 1945.
Mr. Bowman was a lifetime Carroll County resident and a lifelong member of the Deer Creek Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder.
He taught veterans at G.I. School held at Flora and Camden high schools. He served on various county boards and was a township trustee.
Mr. Bowman was inducted into the Carroll County Ag Hall of Fame in 1999.
He served as president of the Carroll County Co-op for ten years and was a past president of the Carroll Consolidated School Corporation Board of Trustees.
He was a lifetime member of the Purdue Alumni Association and also a member of Ceres, an agricultural honorary.
He had belonged to Indiana Farm Bureau since 1946. He also belonged to the American Legion Post #60 in Logansport.
Surviving with his wife are a son, Darrel Bowman (wife: Diane), and a daughter, Mara Hendress (husband: Jerry), both of Camden; four grandchildren, Shane Bowman (wife: Patti), Todd Bowman (wife: Candy), Jason Hendress and Lindsey Jones (husband: Travis); two stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were three brothers, Milt, Hubert and Tom Bowman, and a sister, Kathleen Hatch.
Visitation will be Friday beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the Deer Creek Presbyterian Church and will continue until time of the service there at 3:30 p.m. Pastor Dave Herron will officiate. Burial with graveside military rites by the Logansport American Legion Post #60 will follow at Hopewell North Cemetery in Deer Creek.
