Carroll School Board addresses Internet safety
Carroll School Board adopted a resolution pertaining to Internet safety at its Nov. 3 meeting.
School attorney Miriam Robeson said the corporation already adheres to the Internet safety measures, but adopting a resolution is necessary to be in compliance with the Children’s Internet Protection Act.
The resolution lists the following measures to protect students from inappropriate Internet content:
• Block or filter Internet access by both minors and adults to child pornography or other materials that are obscene
• Prevent minors from gaining access to inappropriate or harmful materials
• Monitor the on-line activities of minors
• Address issues related to the safety of minors using e-mail, chat rooms and other electronic communication
• Hinder unauthorized access (hacking) and other unlawful on-line activities by minors
• Prevent unauthorized disclosure of personal information regarding minors
Upon request from board members on Project Lead the Way expenses, Charles Huckstep, junior-senior high school principal, presented a cost summary for the Biomed Class offered in 2008-2009.
He said grant money available was $25,000, and expenditures were $24,019.26, so there was no cost to the corporation.
The corporation offers Biomed and Engineering courses through Project Lead the Way. Huckstep said grant money is reduced each year in the series of courses, but software and equipment can be used for succeeding classes, and new purchases can be made with the new grant.
“Eventually equipment will wear out, and we’ll have to purchase new,” Huckstep said.
He also pointed out that Biomed courses are science courses and “science courses cost money,” he said.
Huckstep is expecting to offer two new courses in the Biomedical Sciences series in 2010-2011. They will be the third and fourth courses in the series, all with funding from the Department of Workforce Development.
P-T Conferences
Carroll Elementary principal Carolyn O’Connell announced that the school had 96 percent attendance at Parent-Teacher Conferences and that 700 grandparent meals were served on Grandparents Day.
Huckstep said the juniorsenior high school had a good turn-out for Parent- Teacher Conferences – more than in the last few years. This year, 459 parents attended, compared to 390 last year, 345 in 2007 and 400 in 2006.
Both principals mentioned Veterans Day programs at their schools, and there was a blood drive at the high school on Nov. 4.
The board has a proposed calendar for 2010-2011. It will be discussed with teachers and posted on the school website before being adopted. Superintendent John Sayers said the calendar under consideration is comparable to the current calendar.
Three conferences and two field trips were approved.
Family and Consumer Science students and teacher Susan Shively were approved to attend the Wider Opportunities for Women Workshop at Tri County High School.
Spanish Club trip
The Spanish Club and teacher Liz Rose will tour the Art Institute of Chicago, take a guided tour of Pilsen Village, and visit the National Museum of Mexican Art March 12 and 13. Twelve to 14 students will attend at an approximate cost of $270 each. The cost includes transportation and an overnight stay in downtown Chicago.
Jodi Guise was hired as Winter Guard coach, to be paid through Music Boosters.
Sayers said Carroll is a member of the Small and Rural Schools Association. He said there’s a possibility that future legislation may mandate that schools under a certain size consolidate. In light of that, members of the association have begun discussion. He said the idea of consolidating small schools stems from the Kernan-Shepard report. He added that the position of the association is that such decisions should be left to the local school boards.
Two facility requests were approved. Clinton Prairie girls basketball league will use the elementary gym from 6:30 to 8 p.m. from now until Dec. 16. Living Faith Church of the Brethren will use the elementary gym on Feb. 4 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. for tryouts for Upwards Flag Football.
The next regular school board meeting will be Nov. 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the Administration Building.
