Four local students have won a trip to Washington, D.C. in the Marsh Supermarkets “Back to School” essay contest. The students – Rachel Harber, Nick Overmyer and Jarrod Upton of Camden and Natasha Risley of Delphi – were among 400 elementary school winners from Indiana and Ohio.

Cindy Reinke’s double crust cherry raisin pie won the grand prize at the Flora’s annual Halloween Fest last Thursday night.

The feature story in Business Week magazine’s Nov. 1 issue is “Religion in the Workplace: The growing presence of spirituality in Corporate America.” The story includes a recap of a lawsuit against former Delphi police chief, Larry Ives, filed by Jennifer Venters of Delphi.

Members of the Flora Rotary Club cleaned the streets and gutters in the Flora business district early Saturday morning as one of the club projects for the year.

William Richard “Ricky” Mock of Logansport, a suspect in the October armed robbery of Wallmann’s Foods, Inc., Delphi, was killed in Amarillo, Texas, Thursday afternoon.

Mock was shot five times by a Porter County, Texas, duty sheriff following an armed robbery and chase.

50 YEARS AGO

The school board of the Carroll Consolidated School corporation at its regular meeting on November 10th entered into a contract with Mrs. Fern Cochran for the purchase of 40 acres of land at $600 per acre or a total price of $24,000.

James Dillon began his duties as manager of the Farm Bureau Co-op elevator at Clymers on November 1st.

Flora School News - The cast and crews of “Anastasia” were highly praised by the Drama department representative of Purdue University who met with them and their director, Mary Clawson Pastor, following the Friday night performance. Then cast, class members and guests then enjoyed a late dinner in the Bronze Room of the Roth Park Hotel. Steve Collins, president of the senior class, presented Mrs. Pastor with a gift.

75 YEARS AGO

Delphi City elected a Republican Mayor, City Clerk and three Councilmen out of five. Dr. C. W. Hunter was elected Mayor by a majority of 67; Roy Arnold, clerk by a majority of 22. For Councilman, Harry Roach (R), secured 794 votes, Fred Griffith (R) 744, Robert Gamble (R) 687, Harve Hoshaw (D) 685, Frank Reese (D) 684, Keim (R) 677, Dickison (D) 633, were the two lowest and were defeated by only a few votes.

The Delphi basketball season opened last Friday night, and a fairly large crowd watched the Oracles defeat the Cutler team 31 to 17. The evening was started off by a parade, sponsored by the newly organized Pep Club of Delphi and was led by the Delphi high school band.

For the express benefit of our many readers we will say that the rumor flashed over the wires here yesterday morning relative to the murder of Ex-President Theodore Roosevelt I in the jungles of Africa were false according to reports that we received at 10:45 yesterday morning just before going to press, from the Western Union Telegraph Company of Chicago.

Dr. A. J. came to town Tuesday and drove his auto into the Voorhees garage, where he left it standing while he transacted some business. During his absence someone monkeyed with the levers and when he “cranked up” the machine started for one of the large plate glass in the front of the garage. The Dr. made a jump for the levers and succeeded in killing his engine, no one was hurt, however, the $130 plate was demolished.
