Local attractions included in ‘places to see’ book
The Indiana Historical Society Press announces the release of “My Indiana: 101 More Places to See.” Written by longtime writer and columnist Earl L. Conn, who recently passed away, the book takes readers on a visual journey through the Hoosier State and serves as a companion for them in their actual travels.
Carroll County attractions in the book are the Historical Society Museum and Delphi Architectural Tours. Descriptions and photos accompany the listing.
The 101 places in the book are divided into the north, east, central, west, south central, and south portions of the state. Each site is presented in a two-page spread. The book is illustrated with more than 300 color photos taken by the author.
Included with each site is detailed information on how to get there, along with contact information and attraction fees.
The sites featured are a mixture of highly publicized places and off-the-beaten-path destinations – museums, state parks, historic sites, monuments, recreation areas, and other attractions. Written in a conversational style, the book offers opinion on each destination from a visitor’s perspective.
The pages on Carroll County’s Historical Museum point out the Historical Archives Project, which has put well over 100,000 photos on the museum’s web site. Carol Oliver is in charge of the scanning. The author comments on the museum’s abundance of artifacts, including a prairie schooner, the bell out of the county’s first two courthouses (located in the current courthouse rotunda), and a coat and gloves made out of horsehide. William Davis had his horse’s hide tanned and processed in 1920 and made into a coat and gloves.
The author describes Phyllis Moore as a longtime and knowledgeable curator. He also points out that the museum has lost its funding and is run by volunteers.
The section on Delphi Architectural Tours is based on a City of Delphi tour brochure. The tour is self-guided, using the brochure, and audio tour devices are also available at the City Building. Delphi Preservation Society also offers guided architectural tours at various times. One such tour was just given Oct. 18.
The book contains four photos of historic homes in Delphi. Abraham Lincoln is said to have stayed in one home, prior to his becoming president. Franklin D. Roosevelt stopped by another home during his campaign to become vice president. Another home, not pictured, is where Margaret Afflis once lived. She was the mother of wrestler “Dick the Bruiser.”
The author, Earl L. Conn, was dean emeritus, College of Communications, Information and Media at Ball State University. He had written a column called “Traveling Indiana” in the Muncie Star Press, and it was syndicated in many Indiana newspapers. He also wrote “Painting Indiana” in 2000.
“My Indiana: 101 More Places to See” is a sequel to “My Indiana: 101 Places to See” by the same author and published by the IHS Press in 2006. Carroll County Wabash & Erie Canal Interpretive Center was included in the first book.
