Tipton thumps Delphi; rematch Friday

By Todd Swank Contributing sportswriter

The Oracles lost their sixth game to go along with three wins with a regular season ending loss to the visiting Tipton Blue Devils, 49-0. This was the first game of a double header with Tipton. In the first game of the sectional this Friday night the Oracles travel to Tipton to take on the 7-2 Blue Devils in a rematch at 7 p.m.

Any thoughts of an upset by the Oracles last Friday were quickly squelched by Tipton. They took the opening kickoff and on their first possession marched 60 yards on 11 plays and before five minutes had been played were up 7-0.

The next time the Blue Devils had the ball it looked like it was going to be a repeat performance. Tipton advanced the ball to the Oracles 30 before fumbling the ball. Even though Tipton recovered its own fumble the loss of yardage on the play was too much to overcome. The Blue Devils failed on a fourth down and turned the ball over to the Oracles. When the first period ended the Blue Devils held a 7-0 lead, but it could have been worse. Delphi had held the ball for just over three minutes to Tipton’s nearly nine minutes. The Blue Devils had 99 yards to the Oracle’s 23 and held a 7-2 advantage in first downs.

Despite the first quarter, the Oracles, led by Braden Atwood’s running and passes from Tanner Cripe to Matt Brown and Karson Bender, moved the ball down the field early in the second period. Delphi advanced 50 yards to the Tipton 24-yard line before the drive stalled. Tipton forced a turnover when on fourth down the Oracles failed to get enough yards for a first. Five plays later, highlighted by a 42-yard pass play, Tipton held a 14-0 lead. A short punt and an interception led to two short scoring drives for Tipton in the last four minutes of the half and a 28-0 Blue Devil lead at the half.

The third period was much like the first with Tipton again dominating the stats page with over 160 yards offense that led to a pair of TDs. The Oracles were unable to get to midfield until the fourth period when they mustered some consistent ball movement and advanced inside the Tipton 30-yard line. Tipton’s defense was too strong, stopping the Oracles and forcing another turnover. A fourth down play came up short for the second time.

Hopefully, the weather will cooperate and when the temperature warms up a little the Oracles can warm up along with it at the Blue Devils’ home Friday night.
