Cougars defeat Vikings with safety

By Mike Hoffman Contributing sportswriter

The Cougars closed out the regular season with a two game winning streak, defeating the North White Vikings 8-6.

Carroll (4-5) got on the board first with a safety in the second quarter. The Cougar defense had the Vikings at their own 5-yard line when the Vikings center snapped the ball over the quarterback’s head. Carroll was up 2-0.

The score stayed that way until the fourth quarter. North White’s Jacob Ruemler scored on a 93-yard TD pass from Colin Hileman. Ruemler out ran the Cougar defenders for the score. The two-point pass was out of the end zone and North White was on top 6-2.

The Cougars bounced back, moving the ball to the North White 15-yard line. From there Daniel Huckstep went to work and threw a 15- yard touchdown pass to Eric Miller in the end zone. The PAT attempt was no good for an 8-6 Carroll lead.

The Cougar defense held the Vikings to just four first downs. There were a lot of Cougar defenders who made big stops.

Linebacker Jon Bush recorded 17 tackles and an interception.

The offense exhibited its A game. Huckstep led the Cougars in rushing with 54- yards on 13 carries.

Miller, a freshman, had 3 receptions for 54-yards.

With sectional play starting Friday the team will need to cut down on interceptions and fumbles, block for the runners, and block out so Huckstep has time to throw, not forced to run around in the backfield.

The Cougars are on the road against the 7-2 South Newton Rebels, a very good team. Kick-off will be 7:30 p.m. (Eastern).
