Blocked kick seals victory for Cougars

By Mike Hoffman Contributing sportswriter

There was a lot of slipping and sliding Friday night at CHS field after last week’s heavy rains. But despite the cold, the rain and the mud, the Cougars snapped a fourgame losing streak, edging the Frontier Falcons 7-6 on Senior Night.

The Cougars and Falcons were locked in a defensive battle for three quarters with neither team finding the end zone. That all changed in the fourth quarter.

Carroll scored with just over five minutes left in the final period when senior Brandon Williamson ran it in from two yards out. Marcus Hedrick’s kick was good and the score was 7-0 Carroll.

The Falcons came right back with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Dylan Barrett to Grant Ream. With less than two minutes left in the game, Frontier was down 7- 6. Their extra point attempt failed when Carroll’s Brady Noonkester blocked the kick to preserve the victory for the Cougars.

Senior Drew Yoder had a blocked field goal attempt earlier in the game and forced a fumble that ended up in the end zone with the Cougars recovering and giving no score to the Falcons.

Williamson rushed for 97 yards on 27 carries. The Cougars finished with 129 yards rushing and 28 yards passing. Frontier intercepted 2 of Daniel Huckstep’s passes, both to Eric Miller.

Jon Bush led Carroll’s tackling with 10 on the night. Several other players had good performances as well.

The 3-5 Cougars travel to Monon Friday night and take on the 3-5 North White Vikings for the final game of the regular season. Sectional play will start in two weeks.
