Maryanna Selvidge releases first CD

By Jennifer Archibald Staff writer

Maryanna Selvidge of Camden has realized a lifelong dream with the release of a CD, “Surrounded by Grace.”

She and two others featured on the CD, Bethany Smith and Karli Edging, will present a concert Oct. 18 at 2 p.m. at First Assembly of God, 9835W US 421, Delphi.

The CD was recorded at the Gaither Studio in Alexandria, Ind., and includes 15 songs. Maryanna said she chose a variety of contemporary and traditional Christian music. “They are all songs that speak to me for some reason,” she said. “One of my favorites is “God Speaking” because it talks about how God speaks to us through many events and things if we are listening. Two others that follow the theme of the project are “Your Grace Still Amazes Me” and “Were it not for Grace.”

“The CD title, ‘Surrounded by Grace,’ came to me because I realize that I am who I am today because of the fact that my parents were such good examples of lives lived in God’s grace, and that grace surrounds me every day. My goal is to try and live that same life. My big regret is that my parents aren’t here to hear the CD. My dad has been gone 11 years, and my mother just passed away last spring.”

Maryanna grew up in Carroll County and graduated from Delphi Community High School. She is the daughter of the late Reuben and Dorothy Smith.

“I am the youngest of seven children, and we were all raised in a home where music was an important part of our lives,” Maryanna said. “My mother was a music teacher before she started raising a family and was very involved with the music in our church. I can remember being at my grandparents’ house and singing around the piano. Both of my parents came from musical families.”

The CD cover picture was taken by Callie Schimmel in front of Hickory Grove church where Maryanna attended as a child. She said she started singing there when she was about five years old.

“I have been involved in lots of singing groups over the years and have always loved good music. I have always thought it would be cool to make a CD but never had the extra money to pay for it,” she said. “Last fall I was able to see an old friend that I hadn’t seen for about 25 years and introduced him to my husband. In the course of the conversation he asked if I had ever made a CD. When we said we had never had the money, he offered to pay for the project. The money that is made from selling the CDs will be given to missions in Central America.”

Maryanna is married to Ed Selvidge, pastor of Radnor United Methodist Church. Maryanna is involved in leading music at the church.

The Selvidges have been married 16 years and live in Camden. They have two sons and four grandchildren who all live in Oregon.

The other two people on the CD both have Carroll County connections.

Bethany Smith is Maryanna’s niece. She lives in Lafayette, but lived in Carroll County as a child. Her parents are Joyce and Jacob Smith. She is a graduate of Olivet Nazarene University in Kankakee, Ill., with a music major. She gives private piano lessons and is also part of a Christian band called Titus Justice. She does five songs on the CD with violin and piano.

“When she was young at home her parents had to get a second piano because she and her brother argued over who got to play,” Maryanna said.

Karli Edging is the daughter of Monty and Diane Edging of Delphi. She is 14 and a freshman at Delphi Community High School. She started singing at a young age and is involved in the high school music group, Entertainers. She sings a duet with Maryanna on the CD, called “Who Can Satisfy?”

“She has an amazing talent,” Maryanna said.

The CD will be available at the concert on Sunday or by contacting Maryanna at maryanna@tds.net.
