10 YEARS AGO
The 127-year-old Adams Mill Covered Bridge has been restored to its previous grandeur. After many years of disuse and nearly crumbling into the Wildcat Creek, the bridge is again open to vehicular traffic. One small change to the structure is the windows on either side of the ridge so people walking across can view the scenic creek.
Ground was broken last week for a new county owned ambulance garage intended to replace rented space in the City of Delphi. At their regular Monday morning meeting the Carroll County Commissioners said that contractor Walker and Sons was trenching foundation footings and proceeding quickly with the project at the corner of Wabash and Monroe.
James Whitcomb Riley was born on October 7, 1849 in Greenfield, Indiana. He is one of the most loved poets of American literary history.
25 YEARS AGO
Efforts are underway by West Delphi and north Delphi residents to disannex from the City of Delphi because of failure of the city to provide water and sewage facilities to the area.
Neighbors and friends of Dan Hinkle, Rt. 1, Bringhurst, combined his 70 acres of beans Friday and Saturday and also plan to do his corn. He is unable to do the work because of health reasons. This is another example of Carroll County good neighbors in action.
50 YEARS AGO
The vacated Carson school building in Jefferson township was sold by Auctioneer Ray Booth for trustee Orville Schock to Ralph Hall of near Buffalo, Indiana, for $600.00. A tract of ½ acre of land was included in the sale.
A spider inadvertently caused a minor auto accident on Tuesday afternoon when a car driven by Mrs. Della Shoup, of route 1 Bringhurst, went out of control at the drive to the Wertheimer Cattle Co., in Camden. Mrs. Shoup’s car struck the corner of a delivery truck driven by George Delano Herron, of Kokomo, according to police reports. Mrs. Shoup told Sheriff John Roth that her attention had been momentarily distracted by a crawling spider. Despite the spider’s obvious guilt in the matter, Mrs. Shoup was slated for failing to have her car under control. Receiving minor injuries in the accident was Linda Wertz, 13, of Camden, who was a passenger in the Shoup auto.
75 YEARS AGO
A Donkey soft ball will be played at the Walter Dobbins farm next Sunday afternoon, made up of members of the local American Legion and Delphi Chamber of Commerce teams. These donkey games are being played all over the country lately and are causing much excitement. A small admission will be charged in order to pay the expenses.
Mrs. Ethel Hargraves and Mrs. Fred Bassett spent Monday at Indianapolis where they attended a beauty parlor demonstration on permanent waving.
100 YEARS AGO
Dr. Ora Brubaker of Mount Morris, Ill., decided to locate in Carroll County and practice medicine in Burlington. He moved his family in July to live in the home John Stone previously owned. Salaries for Delphi City Officials were: $300 for Mayor; $600 for Marshall; $375 for City Clerk; $1.25 for Water Works Agents and $550 for City Treasurer. City councilmen were paid $2 per night when in actual attendance or absent upon responsible excuse. S.R. Long, proprietor of the Star Theater erected an Airdome on the lot just east of the Odd Fellow’s Building to show moving pictures.
