Fire remains under investigation
The cause of a residential fire in Camden that gutted one room and caused extensive smoke and heat damage remains under investigation according to Camden-Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Department Chief Chuck Foreman.
The residence at 221 East Washington Street belongs to Richard Windell of Delphi and is rented by John and Joyce Sturdivant.
The Sturdivants were not home when the fire was reported by a neighbor at 10:43 a.m. on Sept. 10.
Because the fire had the potential to take off and the home’s close proximity to neighboring houses, Foreman called in a countywide alarm and all of the county’s volunteer departments responded.
Foreman said the fire was brought under control within a matter of minutes, but that firemen remained at the scene until 1:25 p.m. The fire started in the northwest corner of the residence.
One Delphi firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion.
Firemen rescued the family dog, Maddie.
