Don R. Moore I, 83, of Delphi, died at 7:28 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009, at Clarian Arnett Hospital in Lafayette.

Born March 8, 1926, in Carroll County, he was the son of Henry Newton and Mayme Ellen Riggle Moore. His marriage was in 1947 in Rossville to Phyllis Davis, his loving wife of 62 years, and she survives.

Mr. Moore attended school in Flora and was drafted into military service during his senior year, May 17, 1944. He took his basic training at Great Lakes Naval Station in Chicago. He went to Norfolk, Va., and served in the U.S. Navy as a Boatswaim Mate, assigned to the USS Lindenwald (LSD6). He then went to Oakland, Calif., where they loaded 18 Landing Craft Mechanized (LCM) and 18 Sherman Tanks inside the ship. After a stop at Coronado, Calif., to pick up 18 coxswains that helped with the amphibious training, they left for the Philippines to take the tanks for beach landings.

Mr. Moore then returned to the states and went on the USS Almack (AKA10) a cargo ship carrying aviation gas in 55-gallon drums up the Tianjin River in China for a new airfield, where he guarded the gasoline drums for the next two months. He returned by cargo plane to Seattle via Guam and Hawaii and was discharged in February 1946.

He completed his service to his country and enrolled in diesel engine school at Columbus. He was the manager for Garrison Trucking Company for over 40 years. He retired from there and went to work for Tri-State Cob until he retired again.

He was a member and commander for three years of the American Legion at Delphi, a Little League coach, and Boy Scout leader and member of the Order of the Arrow.

Mr. Moore volunteered at the Carroll County Historical Museum and served on the Carroll County Historical Society Board. He belonged to the VFW, American Legion, and First Families of Carroll County and Wabash County.

He was a recipient of the Dr. Charles C. Crampton Legionnaire of the Year award.

He enjoyed fishing and playing cards.

Surviving with his wife are two sons, Don Moore II (wife: Bonnie) of Flora and Gary Moore (wife: Connie) of Monticello; a brother, Bruce Moore (wife: Betty) of Radnor; a sister, Betty Dekker of Lehigh Acres, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Rob Moore, Daryl Moore (wife: Beulah), Crystal Hitch (husband: Johnny), Cody Moore, Kinzie Moore, Chase Moore (wife: Connie), Diane Hsia (husband: Mike) and Denise Loftin (husband: Roger); one step-granddaughter, Jessica Smith; 13 greatgrandchildren and two stepgreat grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were a son, Jackie Moore, on Oct. 15, 2008, and a sister, Mary Wallace in 1993.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, at Davidson Funeral Home in Delphi. Pastor Brent Oliver will officiate. Burial with military rites by the Delphi and Camden VFW and American Legion will follow at Morning Heights Cemetery in Delphi.

Memorials may be made to the Carroll County Historical Museum.
