Volunteers needed to help file tax returns

Comet staff report

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is looking for volunteers to provide tax return preparation assistance to people who cannot afford professional tax help, such as seniors, disabled, non-English speaking people and persons with low-to-moderate income.

The IRS provides free tax law training and all the materials needed to prepare basic individual income tax returns. Training classes generally start in December and January and are held at various locations throughout the state. Another option is to complete tax training and certification online, 24/7, through IRS ELearning, Link and Learn, www.irs.gov.

Volunteer opportunities are available from the week of Feb. 1 through April 15.

To volunteer and attend one of the training classes, contact the IRS via telephone at (317) 685-7786, fax at (317) 685- 7775, or e-mail at aarp.vita.volunteer.recruitment@ irs.gov.
