Free hepatitis and tetanus immunizations Saturday

By Debbie Lowe Staff writer

Kinzer Kinzer Residents and community members are reminded that the Carroll County Health Department, in conjunction with the Emergency Management Agency, will conduct a free immunization clinic Saturday, from 12 to 5 p.m. at the Middle School Gym on Monroe St. Free hepatitis A and B immunizations plus free tetanus shots will be administered.

Eligibility requirements explained by public health nurse Hope Kinzer for the both immunizations include:

Tetanus - Family members/ caregivers of any child under six months in age, adults who have an injury, any adult who has not received a tetanus shot in the last five (5) years, an adult student who is required to have the vaccine for school requirements, emergency and healthcare workers.

Hepatitis A/B - Emergency workers (EMS, fire fighters, police) healthcare workers (anyone doing anything that has to do with the human body... morticians to home health workers), sanitation workers (custodians anywhere, trash men, sewage treatment plants, food workers etc.), school workers (private or public no matter what they do) or daycare personnel (private or public, relative or paid babysitters)

Kinzer said Indiana State Department of Health representatives advised the guidelines are very vague to enable the local health department to offer the vaccine to as many people as possible.

"I feel confident that we can fit everyone into the categories somehow," Kinzer said. "There are no definitions for who fits into what category. So we can fit most anyone into any category."

"Our department and EMA want everyone who needs a vaccination to get one on Saturday," she concluded. "We aren't putting too many limitations on who qualifies so we can immunize as many as possible in the community."
