Lessons from the Heart
Dr. Peter E. Roussakis is the pastor of the First Brethren Church in Burlington. Recently a storm with lightning and thunder breezed through parts of Indiana, including ours.
On the one hand, some people experienced loss of power even damage to their properties. On the other hand, we may view the storm in a positive light. It was welcomed especially because we have had such little rain this summer. Our yards have been brown and crops need refreshment and nutrition.
Spiritually speaking, we need to think through any storms which come our way. While there may be times of challenge and stress, God may have a purpose through them for our good. He may have in mind drawing us closer to Him, that we may consciously depend upon Him more.
Yes, He may see the need for our character to be refined as with Job (42:1-6). Our Lord may choose to test our devotion to enlarge our faith (1 Peter 1:6-7). God may allow suffering to cultivate within us the perseverance He knows we need to make us more fit for Heaven. For we know suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope (Romans 5:3- 4). God may permit testing to enable us to be compassionate helpers to others who suffer (2 Corinthians 1:3-4).
Whatever the reason, God knows our need. He understands, sympathizes, and helps us. The Son and the Spirit intercede on our behalf all the time (Hebrews 7:25, Romans 8:26-27).
How thankful we should be even in times of testing that God may be working out His purpose through us. In this regard, the hymn writer Don Moen expressed these appropriate words of assurance:
"God will make a way where there seems to be no way. He works in ways we cannot see; He will make a way for me. He will be my guide; hold me closely to His side. With love and strength for each new day; He will make a way." Hymn 85 in The Worship Hymnal, Nashville: Life- Way, 2008.
