Tribe is awarded grant

Comet staff report

The Eel River Tribe of Indiana, Inc., has learned that it has been awarded a federal grant in the amount of $174,866.04 to provide a new emergency alert system in Miami County.

The grant award was from the NOAA Remote Community Alert Systems Program 2009.

The alert system will consist of six outdoor pole-mounted sirens, with attending software, training, and maintenance. These will be tied into the existing system in Peru and provide additional and total coverage throughout Miami County.

The Eel River Tribe of Indiana applied for the grant for Miami County in an effort to increase awareness and understanding of Native American culture, said Mike Floyd, Tribe chief. The Tribe has a proven record of positive community involvement, and hopes to show by example the cooperative nature of good neighbors, he added.
