To: Delphi City Council and voters I attended a recent Delphi City Council meeting and came away with several questions and concerns.
Quick decisions are being made by the council. Time should be taken to weigh all the circumstances concerning the issues or requests, etc.
The police department purchased a car. The people of the community are asking - why do we need another car? Why do we need a schedule with so many officers on duty? Why are there so many accidents? It was mentioned in a previous meeting that a car is needed to attend meetings. Doesn't anyone drive their own vehicles to meetings?
A garage door was purchased from Lafayette Overhead Garage Doors. There are retailers in Delphi and the county that could supply such an item.
Carroll County Chamber of Commerce has promoted a "Shop Local" encouragement. This example is left up to the leaders of the community to lead the county to necessary financial stability.
At the meeting, a decision was made to increase the contract amount with Carroll County Economic Development Corporation. During the presentation, Carroll County was compared to surrounding counties for the amount given for economic development. The funds were approved with what seemed like little consideration or deliberation. The council made no request as to how the money was to be spent and what was the projected outcome. The same transpired with the Delphi Airport request for an additional appropriation from the general fund.
What is in the wisdom of only requiring employees, who are hired to enhance our economic development, to only work eight hours each day in the community and no other requirement or investment in the community from them?
Where did the Main Street grant go to enhance the buildings and downtown? This change should have been passed by the city council with an exact purpose. The same question is for the transportation enhancement grant originally for the Canal but then switched to fund the Delphi Opera House. I am concerned about putting all financial efforts into one entity in the downtown area.
We have good people in our city elected positions, but questions need to be asked and reports, department account balances, and funds need requested. The council should hold requesters accountable with action plan reports and outcomes evaluations.
Council, take the time to review, ask for reports before making decisions. The community will support you!
People of the community - ask questions of the people who represent you. It is their duty and obligation to serve you.
Krista Watson, Delphi
