County youth receive scholarships

Several students from Carroll County will be receiving help with the cost of going to college this fall through scholarships awarded by the Carroll County Community Foundation. The Foundation has awarded approximately $254,000 in scholarships for the 2009-2010 school year, including the two Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships.

The recipients of these scholarships were recognized at a reception held recently at the Wabash & Erie Canal Interpretive Center in Delphi.

"There were so many deserving high school graduates this spring," says board member Alan Jackson, of the Carroll County Community Foundation." These scholarship recipients are the students whose teachers and peers admire them for the achievements they have made and the goals they have set for their futures. Obtaining a post-secondary education is not an easy task. Through these awards, we hope to alleviate some of the pressure and allow them to focus on the most important part of college - higher learning."

2009 scholarships and recipients include:

Carolyn S. Gilbert

This fund was established by Carolyn Gilbert and her family and provides scholarships to graduating high school seniors from Carroll Jr-Sr High School.

Recipients are:

Heather Bott, daughter of Dan and Michele Bott, will be a freshman at Ivy Tech Community College- Kokomo campus studying nursing.

Laura Bott, daughter of Dan and Michele Bott, will be a freshman at Ivy Tech Community College- Kokomo campus studying paramedic science.

Indiana Packers

This fund was established by the Indiana Packers Corporation to provide scholarships to a deserving Carroll County graduate who will be pursuing a degree related to agriculture. Recipient Hannah Strasser is the daughter of Tim and Kathy Strasser. She will be a freshman at Purdue University in the fall, where she will study agricultural economics.

Irving E. Manning

This scholarship was established by Joyce Manning and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Manning in memory of their husband and father, Irving Manning. This fund provides scholarships for students graduating from Carroll Jr.-Sr. High School who will be attending a post-secondary educational institution.

This year's recipient is Benjamin W. Bennington, son of Shelly and Paul Amich and a 2009 graduate. He will attend Indiana State University to pursue a degree in technology.

Receiving renewal scholarships from the Irving E. Manning Scholarship Fund are:

Nicholas Jones, a 2008 graduate and son of Troy and Rhonda Jones. He attends Indiana State University.

Shane Clingenpeel, a 2007 graduate and son of Kim Clingenpeel. He attends Purdue University.

Lori Smith, a 2006 graduate and daughter of Craig and Dana Smith. She attends St. Joseph's College.

Joan McCain

This fund was established by Joan McCain to provide scholarships to deserving students graduating from Delphi Community High School.

The 2009 recipient is James Wethington, son of James and Ellen Wethington. He plans to attend IUPUI to pursue a degree in history education.

John & Mary McCormick

This fund was established by John and Mary Mc- Cormick to provide scholarships to students graduating from Delphi Community High School. Brock Farrell, the son of Debbie Farrell and Gary Farrell, is this year's recipient. He will attend Purdue University to pursue a degree in agricultural economics. Mid-North Indiana Executive Committee, Youth for Christ

The Mid-North Indiana Executive Committee Youth for Christ Scholarship Program was established in 2006 for deserving students who have graduated from an accredited Indiana high school, who are residents of Carroll, Cass, or Clinton Counties. The 2009 recipients are:

Anna Alber, daughter of Kevin and Elizabeth Alber, is a 2009 graduate of Frankfort High School. She will attend Taylor University study elementary education.

Xan Gross, daughter of Sally Dirbas and Michael Gross, is a 2009 graduate of Clinton Central Jr.-Sr. High School. She plans to attend Hanover College to pursue a career in the medical field.

Danielle Whitlock, daughter of Adrian and Elaine Whitlock, graduated from Pioneer High School. She will attend Grace College to pursue a degree in elementary education.

Lewis & Hazel Mullin

This fund was established by Mr. and Mrs. Mullin to provide support to Delphi Community High School graduates who will study at any Indiana college or university and who are likely to succeed in this endeavor.

Jim Reed, son of James and Kimberly Reed, is recipient. He will attend Indiana State University to pursue a degree in English education.

Dorothy Stark

This fund was established in 2005 by Dorothy Stark and provides scholarships to students from Jackson Township who will be attending an accredited institution of postsecondary learning.

The 2009 recipient is Aspen Wallace, daughter of Todd and Jodie Wallace. She will attend Purdue University to study photography-related media. Carroll County Community Foundation Scholars

These award recipients are the finalists in the competition for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships. They are recognized as the Carroll County Community Foundation Scholars.

The awardees for 2009 are:

Sarah Griffin is the daughter of Dale and Christina Griffin and graduate of Carroll Jr.-Sr. High School. She plans to study pre-veterinary medicine at Purdue University.

Nicholi Kauffman is the son of James and Maria Kauffman and a graduate of Delphi Community High School. He plans to study mechanical engineering at Purdue University.

Megan Leverenz is the daughter of J. Scott and Cindy Leverenz and a graduate of Twin Lakes High School. She plans to study accounting at IUPUI.

Travis Martin is the son of Mark and Karen Martin, and a graduate of Carroll Jr-Sr. High School. He plans to study business-communications at Purdue University.

Hannah Strasser is the daughter of Tim and Kathy Strasser and a graduate of Delphi Community High School. She plans to study agricultural economics at Purdue University.

Shawneci Windell is the daughter of Anji Kemp and a graduate of Delphi Community High School. She plans to study event management at San Jose University. Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships

Going into its twelfth year, the scholarship program has assisted almost 3,129 Indiana high school graduates in pursuing baccalaureate degrees at Indiana colleges and universities.

This year's Carroll County recipients are:

Kevin Knaus, son of Merl and Janice Knaus, is a 2009 Carroll Jr.-Sr. High School graduate. He will attend Butler University this fall to pursue a degree in pharmacology.

Nicole Springer, daughter of Loretta Springer and Alan Springer, is a 2009 Delphi Community High School graduate. She will attend St. Joseph's College to study biology/ chemistry.
