Dorothy Mills of Delphi will be presented Area IV's 1999 Martin H. Miller Senior Volunteer of the Year Award. She will be honored at a luncheon on Aug. 12 at the Indiana State Fair.

Flora Police Chief Larry Tull, 61, died unexpectedly Friday afternoon at his Flora home. He was appointed Flora's Chief of Police in 1986. Prior to that he had served 21 years as a police officer for the City of Frankfort.

A pilot who attempted to land at Delphi Airport Tuesday, overshot the runway and struck an earth embankment. At 5:15 a.m. Michael E. Martino of Pompano Beach, Fla. lost visibility due to fog at the end of the runway and skidded 359 feet to impact with the embankment.

Seventeen young women will vie for the title in the Carroll County 4-H Fair Queen contest Sunday evening.

50 YEARS AGO

Vernon C. Childs, of Huntertown, Ind. near Fort Wayne, has been employed as the new principal of Delphi high school to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Noel Douglas who will be principal at Terre Haute Gerstmeyer.

Final arrangements have been made for the opening of the Delphi Laundromat. Owners Ted Ingmire and Robert Johnson of Logansport have engaged the services of Uanita Lamb and Malvina Goyer to assist customers.

Coach Tony Berto began calling signals for his prospective Delphi high school football team this fall by sending letters of instructions to about 65 high school lettermen and others who indicated a desire to try out for the team. Berto emphasized, however, that other boys are urged to come to the first meeting at the high school gym on Wednesday, August 12, at 6 p.m.

75 YEARS AGO

Chicago, Ill., July 24 - John Dillinger died with only $7.70 in his pockets. And that is regarded as the reason why he died on Sunday night when federal agents trapped him as he left the Biograph theater at 2433 Lincoln Avenue. Alive, he was no longer able to pay the inevitable, merciless toll which the underworld exacts from the fugitives it protects. Dead, he was worth $15,000 in rewards. Who is to get the $15,000 was a secret closely guarded yesterday by Melvin H. Purvis, chief of the band of United States Department of Justice agents who had made the capture of Dillinger their task for the last year.

The McGregor scholarship to the Indiana State Teachers college at Terre Haute for four years was won by Miss Deloris Flora, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Flora of Burlington township, a student of that school and was awarded by the Carroll County Board of Education and the college has accepted the same.

100 YEARS AGO

Saturday evening at 8 o'clock at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Tinkle, who reside about two and a half miles south of Cutler, occurred the marriage of their daughter, Nellie, to Claude Hinkle. The groom is a prosperous young farmer and a son of Mr. and Mrs. William Hinkle.

After the close of the famous Gingles case Attorney Patrick H. O'Donnell needing rest and recreation from the strain that had been upon him for many days, came to his old home in Carroll County, spending Sunday with his sister, Mrs. Mary Hardy in Rock Creek township where he holds land interests.

Property owners in the vicinity of the farm owned by Robert Baker near Idaville, threaten an injunction suit if Baker persists in his purpose of starting a skunk farm.
