Delphi baseball teams sweep District round
Following the success at the county tournaments, the Delphi baseball teams swept through the District-level of the 41st annual Town & Country Youth Baseball State Tournament with championships at all three age levels.
Senior League
The Delphi 12-year-olds- &-under division won in dominating fashion over Galveston at the District III championship played Monday night in Flora, sweeping the double-header with scores of 6-0 and 18-0.
After being sent to the loser's bracket round of the double-elimination tournament following a 4-2 loss to Flora Sunday afternoon, Delphi rebounded with impressive wins over Walton, 4-0, Russiaville 10-0 and then 5-1 over Flora to earn a shot at previously undefeated Galveston in the finals. Delphi needed to beat Galveston twice in order to win the double elimination round of the tourney.
Delphi gained momentum in the evening's first matchup, using an outstanding pitching performance from Ostin Clark and timely hitting to take the shutout victory and force the "if necessary" game for the District title.
Drawing from its energy from the first game, Delphi again used an excellent pitching outing from Brent Hawn, but this time also with a hitting barrage led by two home runs from Mason Lane to pummel Galveston in a game shortened to four innings via the 10-run rule.
Other members of Delphi's Senior League team include Coy Cronk, Blaine Walters, Elliott Atkinson, Treavor Cox, Garrett Bean, Jarek Perry, Tyler Arion and Kain Myer.
The team is coached by Nick Cronk, David Hawn, Jimmy Arion and Steve Myer.
Junior League
Delphi's 10-&-under team went undefeated in tournament play, capturing the District III championship played Monday night in Otterbein, defeating Rossville in the championship contest, 8-1. Delphi had a strong performance on the mound from Isaiah Heckenlively and key hitting from Jesse Scowden, who went 2-for-2 with a double.
Other Delphi Junior League team members include Weston Windell, Cade Murray, Jacob Clouser, Carson Noonkester, Marcus Austin, James Dyer, Jensyn Reef, Branden Shockley and Ronin Green.
10-&-under coaches are Dave Murray, Rick Windell, Donnie Shockley and Dave Reef.
Minor League
The Delphi 8-&-under team completed the sweep by also going undefeated in tournament play, winning the District I championship played in Reynolds Monday night, coming from behind in its final at bat to defeat Pioneer, 12-11.
The Minor League team consists of Max Kender, Garrett Workinger, Wyatt Snider, Keegan Sheiss, Jaden Mc- Clain, Aaron Webb, Seth Heckenlively, Blake Carroll, Jayk Clark, Jordan Roth and Mason Shoemaker and is coached by John Workinger, Keith Kender, Wes Snider and Darrel Noonkester. Two Flora teams and Rossville team advance
The Semi-State round of the State Tournament will have plenty of local representation as both of Flora's Senior League and Junior League teams qualified for play at the next round by virtue of their respective third-place finishes at the Flora 12u and Otterbein 10u Districts.
Delphi's Senior League team will open Semi-State play against Marion Gold on Thursday at 6 p.m., with Flora facing Alexandria immediately following at approximately 7:45 p.m., with both games at Delphi.
The rest of the Senior League Semi-State field will include Marion Purple, Oak Hill, Galveston and Russiaville.
After its runner-up finish in the District, Rossville will join both Delphi and Flora at the Junior League Semi-State round at Flora, opening on Friday at 6 p.m. against Alexandria.
The Delphi Juniors will again open the round against Galveston on Thursday night at 6 p.m., with Flora again immediately following against Walton at 7:45 p.m.
Frankton and Attica will also compete at the Junior League Semi-State round at Flora.
Delphi's Minor Leaguers will face Galveston Thursday at 6 p.m. to open the 8-&- under Semi-State round at Walton, joining Northwestern, Kokomo UCT, Pioneer, Frontier, North White and the host team in the field.
Forty-eight youth baseball teams from around the state will take part in the Semi- State rounds, including eight at each of the six designated host sites.
Double-elimination tournament play continues throughout the weekend, with the Semi-State championship rounds slated for Monday night at 6, with the "if necessary" game following at 7:45.
The top four teams from each Semi-State will advance to the State finals to be held next weekend.
