Carroll board accepts 12 transfer students
Carroll School Board had a full agenda at its July 7 meeting.
Twelve students will transfer to Carroll schools from outside the district, paying an estimated cash tuition of about $400 each. Superintendent John Sayers said the transfer tuition will not be officially known until the state approves a new formula for calculating the cost. In previous years the cost has been more than $2,000 per student.
Students approved for transfer are Samantha Pickens, Benjamin Pickens, Caitlin Pickens, Casey Crume, Cameron Crume, Shelbi Fisher, Sidney Fisher, Scott Ashby, Megan Ashby, Kayvan Record, Krysta Record, and Morgan Justice.
The board approved a facility use request from elder Donald Peters on behalf of the Old German Baptist Brethren Church (New Conference). The request was for use of the Carroll Elementary gym and kitchen for church service and carry-in meal from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., beginning Sunday, July 12.
Other facility use requests were approved for Carroll Youth Football and Flora Softball Summer League.
This was the organizational meeting for 2009-2010, and board officers were elected. Sam Zook will be president, Dave Lambert, vice president, and Michelle Simmons, secretary. Leslie Allen will continue as corporation treasurer, and Miriam Robeson as corporation attorney.
The annual Conflict of Interest Statements were acknowledged. Meeting dates and times will continue as the first and third Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. at the Administration Building.
The board created the position of school nurse at Carroll Jr.-Sr. High School for 2009- 2010, with the salary to be the same as the school nurse at the elementary school.
Extracurricular assignments for next school year were approved for the two schools, as recommended by the principals. The approval of fall coaches at the junior- senior high school was set aside for later consideration. A complete list of the extracurricular assignments is available at each school or at the Administration Building.
The teachers' workroom at the high school will get a new copier, and the present workroom copier will be moved to the office. The new copier will be purchased through Advanced Business Equipment at a cost of $8,849.
Contractor Jeff Richardson was hired to do some concrete work (sidewalk and curb) at a cost of $11,400.
Sayers said the HVAC project at the high school is progressing on schedule.
Remediation classes for juniors and seniors who have not passed the Graduation Qualifying Exam will begin after school starts. Students needing remediation for both English and math will attend from 5 to 8 p.m., and those needing only one class will attend for half that time. These classes are traditionally held two weeks before school starts. Principal Charles Huckstep said now the students will receive remediation right up to testing time, which will be Sept. 15, 16, and 17.
Misc. equipment was declared surplus, including batteries, electrical cords, film and camera equipment, and 18 field hockey sticks from the PE Dept., dating back to the1960s.
The board approved a recommendation from the Carroll Education Association to gain an extra work day for staff development by making the teacher records day a half day instead of a full day at the end of both semesters. The day gained will be Aug. 11, prior to teachers' first day of school on Aug. 12.
The next board meeting will be July 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Administration Building.
