After a close call with a disease called hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, Alan McConnell is again enjoying such activities as working in his backyard, attending his son's ballgames and going on back-packing trips. He is only the second known person in Indiana to have contracted the rare disease which is transmitted by rodent carriers. He has had to curtail some activities this summer but should be back to teaching this fall.
Dale Zinn of Flora has been named Rotarian of the Year by the Flora Rotary Club and has received a plaque from Rotary International.
Everett E. and Cleone K. Gruber of Delphi were among 52 Hoosier families who were recognized with the Hoosier Homestead Award. To be eligible for the award a farm must be in the same family for at least 100 consecutive years.
Dr. T. Neal Petry of Delphi retired from St. Elizabeth Hospital. A retirement party is not planned but the family is putting together a memorabilia scrapbook.

Total Cable TV, which now provides cable television for Delphi residents, offered a new franchise to the city enabling the subscribers seven new channels in addition to those now received.
The cost would be $3 more than the present cost. For those people having a television set with only 12 channels, Cable TV would offer a free attachment to receive the other channels.
50 YEARS AGO
W. S. "Winnie" Weaver the local high school agriculture teacher was elected president of the Indiana Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association at the 45th annual Vo- Ag Teachers Conference July 17 at Purdue University.
John Sines, formerly of Delphi and basketball star at Purdue University was appointed head basketball coach at the University of Tennessee to replace Emmett Lowery who resigned to enter into a private business in Florida.
75 YEARS AGO
A heavy wind, thunder and rain storm hit the county Tuesday night leaving two barns destroyed by fire caused by lightening and leveling the corn in many parts. South of Delphi some farmers reported that hail fell during the night. The hardest rains seem to have fallen south of Delphi and in the eastern side of Carroll County where corn was reported flattened and the roads badly washed. Many of the creeks in the county were booming, Deer Creek began to rise about noon, Wednesday.
The contract for paving 1,961 miles on state roads 18 and 39 from Pittsburg to three-fourths miles north of state road 18 to Lane's corner was let to Roger Daoust of Defiance, Ohio, Tuesday, by the state highway commission on a bid of $65,745.

In a recent issue of the Indianapolis Star the Rev. E. S. Shumaker, the state head of the Anti-Saloon League, is quoted as follows: "We have many complaints relative to 'blind tigers' and 'bootleggers' in different parts of the state. The officers, particularly at Frankfort, Flora, Lebanon, Rockville, Sullivan are having considerable trouble with the 'suit-casebrigades' of 'bootleggers' and it appears that the officers of Delphi and numerous other places are going to have considerable trouble.
Attorney R. C. Pollard of Delphi underwent a very severe operation at his home Tuesday morning. The operation was performed by Dr. Cooke of Indianapolis and attended by Drs. Shultz, Angell and Carney. The operation was a complete success and Mr. Pollard withstood the ordeal with results pleasing to the physicians.
