'Ride for a Van' this Saturday

By Jenna Buehler Contributing writer

Jose and Miliano Morales Jose and Miliano Morales Carroll County resident Jennifer Schrontz said she volunteered as a representative for the ABATE Showdown Ride that raised $17,000 for children with diabetes last month. She said the event's success inspired her to hold a second poker run July 11 to specifically benefit her nephews, Jose and Miliano Morales, who suffer from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD).

Jose, 15, and Miliano, 12, are students in the Carroll Consolidated School Corporation and residents of Burlington.

"We hope to get the boys a new van that can accommodate both their wheelchairs," Schrontz said. "The van they have is not equipped for them both, they can't even sit up straight in it. A new van would make it easier to transport them."

The boys' mother, Angela Richardson of Burlington, said getting a new van was an unfeasible expense for her family.

"I know the van is something my boys need," Richardson said. "But it's also too expensive for me to afford. I'm so glad my sister loves the boys enough to have this idea and hold this ride."

The Saturday ride will be held at Pechin's Linwood Tavern located at 1242 N 14th St. in Lafayette at noon. There will be a $15 admission fee for riders. Admission for passengers is five dollars. The last bike will leave at 4 p.m.

Gift certificates and homemade blankets will be given to riders with the best poker hand. Free food will be available after the ride.

"Our goal is to raise $5,000," said Schrontz. "Whatever money we raise will hopefully provide the boys with a better quality of life."
