I'm back with more product staple recipes that save cash. This week, we'll focus on baking. The famous boxed baking mix costs a fortune these days. Make your own for pennies a serving. Sometimes you just don't have sweetened condensed milk around for your homemade ice cream recipes, so make your own. The famous chocolate syrup hailing from Pennsylvania is a cinch to make. And, don't you just love chocolate dipped ice cream cones in the summer? Make your own and save your dollars!

Famous Baking Mix

8 C. all purpose flour 1 1/4 C. nonfat dry milk powder 1 1/4 C. baking powder 1 T. salt 2 C. shortening

Combine dry ingredients, then cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Store in tightly covered container. Makes 10 cups.

Sweetened Condensed Milk

3/4 C. sugar 1/2 C. water 1 C. plus 2 T. powdered milk

Combine all ingredients and heat to a boil. Cook until thick, about 15 to 20 minutes. Makes about 1 standard can.

Pennsylvania Chocolate Syrup

1/2 C. cocoa 1 C. sugar 1 C. water 1 tsp. vanilla Dash salt

In a saucepan, combine cocoa, sugar, salt and water. Bring to a boil and boil one minute. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Store in a tightly sealed jar in refrigerator.

Chocolate Ice Cream Shell

1 6-oz. pkg. semi-sweet chocolate chips 1/2 stick butter 1/4 C. vegetable oil

Melt chips and butter in a double boiler. Add oil and mix well. Hardens when poured over ice cream.
