Don't take a vacation from giving blood The need for blood doesn't end when vacations begin. The American Red Cross is asking potential donors to help strengthen the blood supply by volunteering to give blood now. The Red Cross Bloodmobile will be at the Flora United Methodist Church, 107 N. Main Street, on July 16 from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Slumps in blood donations are typical from late May through September as regular donors become busy with fun activities and may neglect to donate blood. At the same time, blood needs can rise due to increased roadway and travel-related accidents. Blood is also needed for people who have cancer, blood disorders, and other illnesses. Some people even need regular blood transfusions to live. In America, every two seconds someone needs blood. The need is constant, while the supply isn't. That is why it is so important for healthy and eligible donors to regularly donate. At the bloodmobile visit in Flora, the area church with the most volunteer donors will receive $100, a gift from the Flora Psi Iota Xi. To make an appointment, call 1-800- GIVE LIFE. Walk-ins are welcome. "Please consider donating blood," said Jane Bishop, blood program coordinator. "You'll feel good knowing you helped your community and helped to save lives." |
