Carroll County Republican Women were awarded the Indiana Federation of Republican Women's highest award, "Going the Extra Mile." The club was recognized for its contributions to the community in membership, community service, support for Republican candidates and the electoral process.
Terry and Denise Davidson became the new owners of the Horn-Davidson Funeral Home in Delphi.
Carroll County Emergency Management Director Dick Curts announced his office was ready to respond to any problems that might occur from the Y2K bug on Jan. 1, 2000.
Jim French will be the Grand Marshall of Delphi's Fourth of July parade which will be July 3. French will lead the parade in a 1966 Mustang.
25 YEARS AGO
One of the Sycamore Row trees on SR 29 south of Deer Creek had to be removed following a fire Monday morning. State highway personnel extinguished the blaze which had burned out the inside of the tree. Because there was danger the tree might fall, it was removed.
A new enterprise will be opening in Delphi Monday consisting of seven mini businesses and named Town Square Mall.
School Attorney Dean Beckner conducted the swearing in of board members Kenneth Orem, Dr. John Bush and Robert Ayres, all reelected in May. William Pickart was reelected to serve as president for one year. Other officers reelected were Fred Martin, vicepresident, and Robert Ayres, secretary. Lou Ann Collins was appointed treasurer to serve for one year.
50 YEARS AGO
Seven employees of the Public Service Company in the Delphi office began a "peaceful" picket of the uptown office and warehouses. The contract between the company and I.B.E.W. Local Union No. 1393 and the union membership turned down the new proposed contract.
Boys State was held at Indiana University for young men to learn the workings of the government. Those attending were: David Beale, Holly Mount, Barney Breedlove, director of Boys State, drill sergeant, James Clawson and Larry Felix. Clawson was a Delphi High School graduate and Felix was chosen by the assembly to be the amateur photographer.
Singer Fabian appeared at the Independence Day weekend festival at Indiana Beach in Monticello for a one-night appearance July 5.
75 YEARS AGO
Clifford Baldwin, 35, of Delphi was a patient at Home Hospital recovering from a wound inflicted by a razor during affray at the home of Mrs. Lizzie Morrow, 43, of Lafayette.
The Crosby Hotel in Delphi received the honor of being Delphi's principal hostelry. The spirit of hospitality and conveniences are just what you might expect from a fine hotel.
Miss Lee Shaeffer and Mrs. E. O. Grimm were hostesses at a pretty party Monday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Ulm in Delphi. Bouquets of garden flowers were artistically arranged about the house. Bridge was played at twelve tables with the following ladies receiving the honors: Mrs. Ray Gochenour, Mrs. Charles Cartwright, Mrs. John Carney of Monticello, Mrs. Mark Carter and Miss Hilda Bowen. Refreshments were served at the close of the evening.
100 YEARS AGO
During the Fourth of July celebration in Flora there was an automobile race beginning at the corner by the post office and ending at the same point. There were 60 turns with five laps to be taken by the racers.
New electrical lights were turned on for the first time in the town of Flora and they were dandies!
Albert Pickering, a farm hand employed on the farm of Staley Gasaway, was seriously injured in a runaway accident Wednesday evening. He was driving to town in a buggy when the horse ran away, throwing Mr. Pickering on a barb wire fence. His left arm and hand were badly cut and torn and his breast was painfully lacerated, besides a number of bruises about the body. The injuries are quite serious and it will be several days before he will be able to work.
