Recycling program successful, winning awards
Carroll County has a program that is outstanding in the state and has received recognition for its efforts. Carroll Communities Recycling Cooperative (CCRC) received a distinction by being featured on the front page of the 2008 Indiana Municipal Power Agency (IMPA) annual report magazine. CCRC also received last year's Local Government Cooperation Award. In addition to receiving awards, Delphi Street Superintendent Aaron Lyons said that his department "had a successful run last year." They collected more than 708 tons of material was collected to be recycled.
CCRC offers curbside recycling collection services to Flora and Burlington on Wednesdays and Delphi on regularly scheduled trash pickup days (Tuesdays for residents). Recyclables must be on the curb by 7 a.m.
Drop off locations are available at the Burlington fire station, with an attendant on site every third Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon; Camden Community Center with an attendant on site every on the second and fourth Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon; and at 259 N Washington St. in Delphi, an unattended 24-hour location. Recycling items accepted at curbside and drop-off sites include: Cardboard Aluminum and steel cans Newspaper Magazines Glass Number one and two
plastics
Oil, oil filters, and antifreeze can be brought to the Carroll County Highway Garage located at 616 E. Elizabeth St. in Flora 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A limit of 5 gallons of non-contaminated used oil per person can be accepted.
Lyons said CCRC is no longer able to collect paint due to a lack of space. He said that absorbing latex paint into kitty litter makes it acceptable for pickup. Lyons said that the lack of space also prohibits CCRC from expanding the program to collect oil and fluorescent light bulbs. Those items should be disposed of on the Northwest Indiana Solid Waste District collection day.
