Archaeologist Wayne Bischoff made significant discoveries during the dig along the Wabash & Erie Canal Towpath. The most outstanding find was evidence of an 1839 Irish construction camp set up to build the Deer Creek dam and canal towpath. The site was important for the clues it gave to early Irish- American history.

Delphi Community High School graduate Sarah Duke had a lead role in the "Up With People" performance of "ROADS" during their world tour.

Adam D. Wilson of Cutler received his Eagle Scout Award. To receive the badge, Wilson built and placed blue bird houses throughout the Flora Community Park.

Carroll County athletes earned 12 gold medals from the Special Olympics State Track & Field Event held at Indiana State University in Terre Haute.

25 YEARS AGO

West Delphi residents can expect to have Cable TV available by late summer or fall.

Sixth 'Hog Jog' attracted 556 runners in the two divisions. Three hundred eightyfive crossed the finish line in the 6K run while 181 competed the 1.9 mile run.

Mark Keen won 1st prize in the Pork Cook-off while 2nd place went to Rick Keen and 3rd to Mike Little.

Katie Smith was crowned the 1984 Little Miss queen at the Carroll Pork Festival.

50 YEARS AGO

The Gateway Excavating Company of Noblesville had the lowest bid of $11,485 to do the excavating work necessary to make an athletic field on the Hillcrest school grounds in south Delphi.

The Carroll County Council granted $43,000 for repairs to the Maxwell Bridge. The Hamilton Street Bridge in Delphi received $5,000 for repairs. The council also appropriated $16,000 for the construction of a bridge over Middelfork Creek in Democrat Township.

75 YEARS AGO

The barn of Mrs. John Cree of Rockfield burned to the ground and only three horses and one halter were saved. The Rock Creek Township and Camden fire departments responded and kept other buildings from burning to the ground. It was the fourth on the farm in a week. An old log house caught fire at three different times, but was extinguished.

Sixteen members of the Washington Township 4-H Club met with Mary Margaret Fouts. The name, "Smile, Work and Win" was voted as the name of the club.

The old Citizens National Bank building was purchased by Herbert Smith and was remodeled into several rooms. The front part of the building was occupied by Mr. Smith and the back part of the building was rented out. It was a good location and made for nice rooms.

100 YEARS AGO

Carrollton Township Trustee, John U. Shanks made preparations for the construction of the new four-room school building at Gravel Hill in order to centralize the schools of the west precinct of the township as some of the schools fall below the required attendance and have to be abandoned. A petition was presented to the County Commissioners to build a gravel road on the township line north of town beginning at the point of intersection with the Flora and Delphi gravel road at Bachelor Run to run along the line between Monroe and Jackson townships to the east end of the townships.
