Three Carroll County bridges Wilson, Maxwell and Carrollton were placed on the 1999 Wabash Valley Trust Endangered Structures List. The Carroll County Bridge Coalition was working hard to save the three historic bridges.

The Greater Delphi Days Festival and Trade Show was moved to the downtown around the courthouse square for the first time to allow small businesses to participate. The move allowed for a greater variety of activities, concessions and crafts.

The Carroll Jr./Sr. High School varsity baseball team defeated the Rossville Hornets 4-3 to win the IHSAA Class A Sheridan Sectional Championship game. Carroll had not won a sectional title since 1979.

Kelly Currie, of Delphi was named the new Delphi Public Library Director.

25 YEARS AGO

The 7th annual Carroll Pork Festival will begin at 4 p.m. Friday and continue through Saturday evening.

The annual conference of the Old Order of the German Baptist Brethren attracted over 8,000 members from 11 states to the Floyd Welk farm.

The main purpose of the national gathering is to set guidelines for living and unite the brethren in their beliefs.

50 YEARS AGO

James "Jim" French, former Delphi resident and graduate of Delphi high school, was named principal of the Murdock Elementary School in Lafayette by the Lafayette School Board.

Rev. Robert D. Wilburn became the new minister at the Delphi Methodist Church replacing Rev. Lorrane Campbell who transferred to Rensselaer.

Chief Frederick Frantz, Navy Recruiting officer of 114 N. Indiana St., Delphi was responsible for having a surface-to-air missile brought to Delphi where it was placed on exhibit. The missile could pick-up targets from the infrared rays of a plane's engine. Once the missile "homes" in on a plane it cannot lose it.

75 YEARS AGO

A swarm of bees settled on a limb in a tree in the orchard on the James Sink farm near Camden. The swarm became dislodged and caused a great deal of excitement when they settled on Charles Isaacs. Isaacs an employee of Sink fainted from the excitement and the poison. He was taken to the Sink home and a physician was called. He was revived and treated for the bee stings. The horse broke free and ran away.

Crawford's Grocery Store closed making it the fifth store to close in Delphi in the past months. Crawford's had only been in business a few years.

The formal opening of the swimming pool at the Delphi park started at 6 p.m. Thursday evening. Charles James was the life guard and caretaker of the pool. The first band concert also was that evening.

100 YEARS AGO

An automobile driven by John S. Lairy, judge of Cass circuit court wrecked on the way home from Logansport. His passengers Judge George A. Gamble of Flora, Misses Sue and Minnie Blassingham were thrown from the machine and severely injured. Gamble and Minnie Blassingham went down an embankment and suffered internal injuries. Lairy escaped with only a wrenched back.

It was reported by Prof. John A. Braeshear, chancellor of the Western University of Pennsylvania that the strangest eclipse of the sun for over 400 years was visible June 17 in Flora.
