Canen, Springer lead DCHS Class of '09

Canen Canen Delphi Community High School's 2009 Valedictorian is Ali Canen. Salutatorian is Nicole Springer. They both gave addresses at commencement on Saturday.

Canen is the daughter of Tim and Beth Canen of Camden. She attained four years of perfect attendance and was on the distinguished honor roll all four years. She was a member of National Honor Society for two years including one year as treasurer. School activities include: Yearbook staff for three years and one year as editor; Key Club, two years; French Club, four years; Battle of the Books, four years; Fellowship of Christian Athletes; freshman mentor; Junior Rotarian and junior marshal.

She was on the tennis team for four years and was a 2008 regional qualifier.

Her other accomplishments include: 10-year 4-H member; American Cancer Society Daffodil Fundraiser volunteer; Carroll County Fair Clean-up; Pride Day; Carroll County Christmas Baskets and Toy Store; Blood Drive volunteer and three-time donor; Member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church; Camden Community Vacation Bible School volunteer; Hoosier Girls State and Lugar Symposium Delegate and Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Nominee.

Springer Springer Awards and scholarships she received include: Excellence in French Award (four years); Outstanding Achievement in Math (four years); Air Force Math and Science Award; Bradshaw English Award (two years); Camden Woman's Literary Club Award; Excellence in Journalism Award; United States Marine Corps Scholastic Excellence Award; Hoosier Scholar Scholarship; Student Council Scholarship; Delphi Rotary Scholarship; Mike Van- Sickle Memorial Delphi Kiwanis Scholarship; and Psi Iota Xi Scholarship in memory of Margaret Afflis Johnston.

Canen will attend Purdue University in the fall and major in speech, language, hearing sciences and pre-occupational therapy.

Springer is the daughter of Alan Springer of Lafayette and Loretta Springer of Monticello.

She is a 2009 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar, vice-president of National Honor Society, and a member of SADD, Key Club and Spanish Club. She was group leader and a four-year participant in the Battle of the Books, as well as a Junior Rotarian.

She competed on the DCHS girls varsity tennis team for four years and was a cheerleader for three years.

She has been involved in her church youth group and is a 10-year member of the Tippecanoe Triumphs 4-H Club.

Her awards include National Society of High School Scholars, Scholarship "D" Award, most improved for tennis, most improved for cheerleading, and student ambassador for People to People.

She was recently awarded the following honors and scholarships: Senior Chevron, Bradshaw English Award, Key Club Honors, Math Award, White County Memorial Hospital Scholarship, Hoosier Scholar, and St. Joseph Honors Scholarship.

Springer plans to study premedicine at St. Joseph's College in Rensselaer to be either a doctor or optometrist.
