Reading Recovery students receive books
Eighteen Delphi Community Elementary School (DCES) first graders have received books in memory of Susan Nierstheimer. The students completed the Reading Recovery program, an early intervention program that helps struggling readers learn to read and write. The students met from 12-20 weeks for one-on-one tutoring with a specially trained Reading Recovery teacher. Each child was presented a commemorative book bag with four books that were selected to further develop strategies learned through Reading Recovery. Nierstheimer was an assistant professor in literacy and language at Purdue University who lost her battle with cancer in 2005. She strongly believed in the Reading Recovery Program and her family and a friend are honoring her request that books be given in her name.
