Carroll County Sheriff calls Monon girl a hero
According to the Carroll County Sheriffs Department, Micaila Marie Cooley, 8, of Monon, is a hero thanks to classroom training on emergency situations that she received while attending Monon Elementary School.
Micaila and her two younger sisters were spending Monday afternoon at their grandmother Merida McCumbers' home on West Freeman Lane, Monticello, (south of Monticello-Carroll County) when Micaila found that her grandmother had fallen outside of her residence onto concrete and was injured.
Micaila obtained her grandmother's telephone and quickly called 911. She provided dispatchers at Carroll County 911 with all necessary information while at the same time keeping her younger siblings calm. Upon arrival of emergency first responders, Cooley assisted in providing responders with contact information for other family members who needed to be notified.
McCumbers was transported to White County Memorial Hospital with severe head trauma.
"Micaila's calm demeanor and patience in providing information to our dispatchers was a real asset in this situation," Carroll County Sheriff Tony Burns said. "She is to be commended for being able to handle the situation as well as she did for a person of her age. She is a hero in our book," Burns added.
