Red Cross observes World Blood Donor Day
The need for a strong and stable blood supply around the globe will be observed June 14 through World Blood Donor Day.
"Blood availability is a universal issue," CEO for the Indiana Ohio Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross Sharyn Whitman said. "World Blood Donor Day gives us the opportunity to honor those who donate blood within our communities, and to encourage others to give the gift of life."
According to the World Health Organization more than 80 million units of blood are donated every year worldwide. Despite those donations the majority of the world's population does not have access to a safe and adequate blood supply. Just 38 percent of the world's blood supply is collected in developing countries where 82 percent of the global population lives.
"Chances are someone you know has needed blood to help save their life," Whitman said. "In fact every two seconds, someone in America needs blood."
The first World Blood Donor Day was June 14, 1995. Every year the number of participating countries increases with activities being held in the majority of nations around the world.
"In the United States, volunteer blood donors are the main source of blood for hospital patients," Whitman said. "Every day the generosity of America's blood donors helps ensure that patients across the nation will have the blood they need, when they need it."
Individuals who are least 17 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and are in good general health may be eligible to donate blood. All donors need to present positive identification. In Indiana, teens 16 years of age may give blood with written, parental consent.
All presenting donors in June will be entered in a drawing for a grill package worth $1,000. The package includes a $500 gift card to purchase a grill and a $500 gift certificate for steaks.
