EH awards are announced
      Carroll County Extension Homemakers celebrated achievements of outstanding clubs and individuals at their annual Friends Day/ Achievement Awards on April 30. The theme for the day was "How to Be a Shining Star." Six new members were recognized with an IEHA pin. New members are: Kay Everett, Rachel Harker, Sara McManus, Joyce Orem, Laurie Weaver and Kris Yoder.

      The DISABLED AMERICAN VETERANS Mobile Service Office will be in Kokomo on May 28 from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. to provide counseling and claim filing assistance. Like all D-A-V services, help from the Mobile Service Office is free to all veterans and members of their families. The Kokomo location will be at the VFW Post No. 1152, 920 N. Washington Street.

      Carter Riley, a professional horse jockey, recently introduced the Carroll County 4-H Horse & Pony Wrangler Club to the racing industry. He also explained how he became a part of it.

      Troy Andrew Cook and Jennifer Feliciano, both of Flora, are parents of a 7-pound son, Andrew Nathan Cook-Feliciano, born May 8 at St. Joseph Hospital, Kokomo. Grandparents are Julio and Mary Lou Feliciano of Staten Island, N.Y., and Esther Cook of Flora.

DNR seeking Indiana's largest trees
      The Indiana DNR is accepting nominations for the 2010 Big Tree Register, a list of the largest known native trees in the state, published every five years. The application requires three measurements of a tree—total circumference, in inches, at 4 1/2 feet above the ground; total height, in feet; and average crown spread, in feet.

      Kiwanis Club will serve food on Saturday at an auction in Wheeling. CWF will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Kokomo. United Methodist Church committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the church. A Mother-Daughter Banquet will be held at 6:30 p.m.

      A dumpster is being provided at the Camden Community Building from May 15-26 for scrap metal donations. All money raised will help with upgrades at the Camden-Jackson Twp. Park. Camden's annual townwide spring clean-up will be May 21. All items should be set out by the curb at 7 a.m.

Washington Twp.
      A special celebration was held recently at Faith Lutheran Church for graduate, Tyler Yeakley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Yeakley. Following worship, cake and punch were served in the fellowship hall. The women of Faith Lutheran Church will hang their Unity Quilt in the church during worship Sunday.

Sheriff's dept. purchases AEDs
      The Carroll County Sheriff's Office recently received grant money from The Andersons Foundation and Carroll County REMC Operation Roundup to purchase eight Automatic Electronic Defibrilators (AEDs).

4-H News
      Wranglers The Carroll County 4-H Horse & Pony Wrangler Club visited Horizon Veterinary Service in April. Dr. Dawn Frank gave a presentation on horse health and safety. She also gave a live horse demonstration on how to hear a horse's heart beat and take a horse's temperature.

Low-cost fundraising training open to Indiana youth workers
      The recession is causing many foundations, corporations and even individuals to rethink philanthropic giving, according to the Indiana Youth Institute (IYI). Fundraising skills are at a premium for non-profits relying on gifts and grants to survive making leaders look for ways to stretch resources.

      Camden library Camden-Jackson Twp. Public Library held a special program for participants in the library's Winter Into Spring Reading Club. Jan Newton of Logansport presented a review of the book, "Dewey," the small town library cat who touched the world, by Vicki Myron. During refreshment time, memories were shared of special cats.

SFLECC applies to join Adopt-A-River program
      The Shafer and Freeman Lakes Environmental Association (SFLECC) have filed an application with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources to join Indiana's Adopt-A-River (AAR) program. The AAR is similar to INDOT's Adopt A Highway program.
