Lady Oracles win three of four

Week number four of the high school softball season kicked off with the seventhranked Lady Oracles visiting the Lady Cougars on the Cougars' home field.

Delphi jumped out to a nine-run lead in the top half of the first inning. The Oracle bats were in high gear as the Oracles had two doubles and two triples in the first inning. They continued to score in each of the next three innings until the game ended after the fifth inning with the score 15- 0. Each of the Oracle starters scored. The big bats for Delphi were Whitney Arion, Chanler Norman, and Danni Burge, who each collected multiple hits, Arion with three and Norman and Burge with two each.

Defense was also a big part of the game as freshman Caitlin Schock got her second start of the year. Schock threw a one hitter, the only hit by Cougar Hanna Marvin who got a single in the first inning. After this one hit Schock and the Oracle defense were flawless as only one Cougar runner reached base on a walk, but was soon sent back to the dug-out on a slick double play by Jordyn Bieghler, Arion and Norman. Megan Yates assumed the mound in the bottom of the fifth inning and got the save facing only three batters to end the game.

Vs. West Lafayette

The next night the Lady Oracles hosted the Red Devils of West Lafayette in a Hoosier Conference game. Delphi came away with the 10-2 victory being pushed to seven innings. Senior Brittney Atwood got her eighth win of the season against one loss. Atwood pitched the first four innings and Schock got the save pitching the final three.

The Oracles played good defense in a game played in intermittent rain - the ball was wet and slick most of the night. The Red Devils, playing under the same conditions, were not as solid and the Lady Oracles made them pay on each error and passed ball. Delphi's bats were working well and the offense executed expertly. The Oracles were held scoreless the first inning but jumped out to a lead in the second as Schock, Burge, Brittney Rhodes, and Atwood opened the inning with singles and were sacrificed home by bunts by senior catcher Leslie Kayser and sophomore second baseman Bieghler. The Oracles scored in three of the next four innings to put the game out of reach.

Vs. Twin Lakes

Saturday morning the rain stopped and the sun came out for a Hoosier Conference double header between the Oracles and Twin Lakes Lady Indians. The Indians had an undefeated conference record coming into the day. The Indians took the first game 9-8 with the Lady Oracles taking the second, 5-3.

Game one started with the Indians jumping out to a 4-0 lead before sophomore third baseman Carli Rouhier slammed a two-run homer over the left center field fence. Norman had been walked one pitch earlier. The Lady Indians came right back out scoring five runs, three in the fourth and two in the fifth before the Oracles shut them down for the rest of the game.

The Oracle bats began to heat up as Delphi put three singles together by Norman, Rouhier and Schock, who all scored on a sacrifice by Burge and a double by Rhodes. The Oracles cut the lead to one as Kayser, and Bieghler got on with singles and were brought home by Rouhier's second home run of the game. Atwood and the Oracle defense shut the Indians down in the top of the seventh. The first two batters for the Oracles in the bottom of the seventh inning were Kayser and Bieghler, who both got to base and then moved to second and third on a sacrifice by Atwood. The Oracles were unable to push either run across and the Indians got the game.

In the second game the Oracles came away with the victory scoring the first run of the game in the fourth and never giving up the lead. The first run came on a walk by Burge who moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Aspen Wallace, stole third and was driven home by Kayser. The Oracles scored three runs in the fifth on singles by Arion, Schock and a triple by Burge. Burge came home on a hit by Rhodes who beat out a bad throw from third base. Kayser scored in the sixth inning to give the Oracles a 5- 0 lead. The Indians scored three in the sixth but Schock struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the 5-3 victory.

This week the Oracles have a busy schedule, playing at Rossville on Monday, at Sheridan on Tuesday, hosting Sheridan on Thursday, playing at Central Catholic on Friday and hosting Hoosier Conference foe Tipton in a double header on Saturday. Saturday's start time will be 1p.m. Come out and support your Oracle ladies.
