Lady Oracles claim three more wins
Week three of the softball season began with the Delphi Lady Oracles rated 8th in the state in Class 2A. The Lady Oracles did nothing to make one think they should do anything but move up in the ratings. In three recent games the Lady Oracles outscored Carroll 12-0, Pioneer 10-0 and Tri County 11-1.
Vs. Carroll
Monday night found senior Brittney Atwood pitching for the Oracles while the Lady Cougars started freshman Sydney Pencek. The Lady Cougars were able to get two base runners into scoring position in the first inning but Pencek and Victoria Henderson were stranded on third and second base. Atwood turned up the heat, got out of that inning and allowed only one other base runner for the rest of the game, Lucia Zook on a single in the fourth.
The Lady Oracle bats were hot getting 10 hits for the game and scoring in each inning. All but one of the starting nine scored for the Lady Oracles. Caitlin Schock, Carlie Rouhier and Chanler Norman all went 2-for-3 on the evening with Schock getting a triple and Rouhier, a double. The Oracles executed the offence well with Danni Burge, Morgan Lavy, and Brittney Rhodes sacrificing runners home or into scoring position. This game was a good overall performance for the Oracles.
Vs. Pioneer
Wednesday night the Lady Panthers were able to get a couple of base runners in the first inning but rarely thereafter. Senior pitcher Atwood got the pitching win in this game, giving up one hit and throwing 6 strike outs. Schock got the pitching save, taking the mound in the fourth inning, giving up one hit with four strike outs. Battery mate Leslie Kayser had a good game behind the plate throwing out one of the few Panther base runners as they attempted to steal second in the fifth inning. The Lady Oracle bats were hot in this game. The Oracles jumped out to a 6 run lead in the bottom of the first inning. At one point seven Oracles in a row reached base. One of the big hits of the inning was a triple by Rouhier who reached home on the play as a bad throw to third allowed her to score.
The Pioneer starting pitcher was forced off the mound in the fourth inning after taking a line drive off the left knee. The young lady, who assumed the mound, gave up four runs as the game ended with a single by Rhodes, driving in Schock to win the game.
Vs. Tri County
Friday night's game was a warm sunny evening, allowing a large crowd of fans to make their way to the game. They were entertained by another good, all-around performance by the Lady Oracles. Atwood got the win again to boost her record to 7 and 1 on a 4 hit, nine strike out game. Schock came to the mound in the sixth inning getting her second save of the season. The Cavaliers were held scoreless until the fifth inning when center fielders Ricka Wireman got to third on a ball off the top of the center field fence and was driven home by the next Cavalier batter. Tri County had another opportunity to score in the third when the Lady Oracles caught a Cavalier base runner in a run down between third and home but were unable to get the out.
Atwood struck out the next two batters to end the inning. For the third game in a row the Lady Oracles jumped out to a good lead when Rouhier smashed a three-run homer in the first inning. The Lady Oracles scored in each of the next five innings to take the game 11-1. The Oracles had 10 hits for the game with 8 different Oracles scoring. Lavy got the game ending RBI driving in Schock. Along with Rouhier's home run Whitney Arion had a triple in the second inning. Schock also had a double.
