McClain calls state budget proposal 'overspending'
Indiana House Representative Rich McClain said late Tuesday the latest version of the state's budget bill proposed for passage was between $5 million and $6 million more than projected income for the state. He reiterated what he stated at the April 18 final Third House session in Monticello - that he "says no to bills" that spend more of the state's money than the state has to spend.
"I won't vote for a bill that overspends that much," he said.
McClain said he thought Gov. Mitch Daniels would veto the bill if it reached his desk. He said House members requested a 24-hour advance preview of the proposed budget in order to review it before a vote.
"We are in constant committees," he said.
McClain said the newest proposed bill to manage the state's unemployment insurance burden would increase the tax on business from between $300 to $700 million. He said it was estimated that a business with a $1.2 million budget would pay between $75,000 and $156,000 in unemployment taxes. He said he could not predict the future of that bill.
"There are no done deals however," McClain warned.
The legislative session will conclude at midnight Wednesday, April 29. Mc- Clain said it was conceivable the governor could veto the budget bill at the final hour and recall the legislators to vote on an amended bill at 12:01 a.m. Thursday morning.
