Carroll math team wins championship

For 11 years straight, Carroll Jr.-Sr. High School's math team has won the Hoosier Heartland Conference math contest.
Carroll won the championship title on April 22 with a score of 1,366. Second place winner was host school Tri- Central with a score of 1,067. Other placings were: Rossville, third; Clinton Central, fourth; and Clinton Prairie, fifth.
Each school sent a team of four students in each of five test categories: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus. A total of 100 students participated.
There were two parts to the competition - an individual test lasting 60 minutes and a 45- minute team test where all four team members worked together.
Three types of awards were presented:
Individual ribbons were given in each test category for performance on the individual test.
Each test category had a champion based on the individual test results and the team test results in that subject.
An overall conference champion was crowned based on the total results of all five test areas. As conference champion, Carroll took home a traveling trophy for display until the next year's contest.
Carroll coaches are math teachers Gary Duff, Susan Abbott, Linda Harrold, and Ryan Duff.
Four of Carroll's five teams placed first - Algebra I, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus. Carroll's Geometry team placed third.
Rossville teams placed first in Geometry, second in Algebra II, second in Pre-Calculus, third in Calculus, and fifth in Algebra I.
Individual placings for Carroll and Rossville are given below. Those in the top 10 in each category received ribbons.
Algebra I: Carroll - Tallis Bowers, first; Betsy Bingaman, second; Derik Caldwell, sixth, Gavin Hancock, seventh. Rossville - no participants.
Algebra II: Carroll - Cory Seward, first; Kate Hickner and Jackie Tussinger, tie for second; Jordan Hendershot, sixth. Rossville - Robbie Hawkins and Fernando Madrigal, tie for fourth.
Geometry: Carroll - Blake Mills, fourth; Jill Griffin, fifth. Rossville - Josh Hufford, first; Quan Nguyen, third; Jay Shideler, seventh.
Pre-Calculus: Carroll - Sarah Griffin, second; Crystal Keck and Michael Myer, tie for third; Abby Reinke, fifth. Rossville - Daniel Gascho, first; Avery Christian, seventh; Matt Jones, eighth; Emily Villars, tenth.
Calculus: Carroll - Carson Spesard, first; Travis Martin, second; Ashley Bordner and Kevin Knaus, tie for fourth. Rossville - Dane Snyder, seventh; Leanne Shideler, ninth.
