'Home-grown' mushrooms
One couple in Cutler didn't have far to go to find mushrooms. They walked out their front door - and there they were - about 50 gray sponge mushrooms, scattered in their yard. Although they've been finding the tasty morels at their home for several years now, they said this year was the greatest number, and maybe the earliest. They picked them last Thursday. The husband said he's glad these mushrooms are close at hand because he can walk for miles looking for mushrooms in a woods. The couple said early in the spring, they watch for the mushrooms so they don't accidentally step on them or mow them off. The biggest ones usually measure about two inches. The couple has no idea why mushrooms like their yard. A neighbor suggested it might be their ash tree. The mushrooms come up in small clusters, all in one section of their yard. One cluster even popped up in their rocks. The husband and wife wish to remain anonymous for obvious reasons. They assure would-be trespassers that this year's "home-grown" crop is all gone.
