Deer Creek Alumni gather for 95th meeting

The 95th Deer Creek Alumni Association met recently at the Deer Creek Community Center with 85 in attendance. The dinner was catered by the Stone House Restaurant of Delphi.

Larry Jones gave the invocation before the meal. President Charles Appleton conducted the business meeting. The entertainment was a Sing-a-Long with Deb Binford of Logansport playing the keyboard.

New officers for 2010 are: Joyce Brubaker, president; Nancy Larimore, vice president; Lois Wallace, secretary; and Carolyn Shriver, treasurer.

Nan Jones read the names of those who had died since last year. They included Art McFatridge, Owen Brant, Charles McFatridge, Charles Yeager, Mary Lantz Hyman, Gene Appleton, Martha Martin, Marjorie Yeager Bailey, Bertha Boyer McCain, Jo Appleton, and Theresa Porter Helvey

The classes of 1931 through 1939 were honored. Attending were: Lavon Johnson 1931, Junior Robeson 1932, Ellen Herr 1934, Wayne and Helen Forgey 1938, and Fred Martin 1939.

Lee Wayne Yeakley gave some history about the Deer Creek Alumni that started with the first meeting on Feb 3, 1916. He said each member was assessed 25-cents to attend the meeting. The earlier meetings were held the third week of April, right after graduation. Carl and Mary Chapman Yeakley, graduating in 1918, never missed an alumni gathering. He also said that unless a member had been initiated, they could not vote.

The service men and women were honored in 1945 with 61 from Deer Creek High School. Carl Yeakley was treasurer for three years, missed two years then served as treasurer for 52 straight years. Kenny Yeakley served as treasurer, starting in 1987 and served until this year. He was presented with a gift certificate to his favorite restaurant and a flower.
