Lady Oracle Softball off to 4-0 start
The Delphi Lady Oracle softball team got off to a quick start with plans to repeat their Sectional championship and more. This year's team will be led by seniors Brittney Atwood, Leslie Kayser, Morgan Lavy and Aspen Wallace and a solid crew of underclassmen.
Vs. Lewis Cass
The Lady Oracle's first game of the year was against defending state champion Lewis Cass on the Lady King's home diamond. The Oracles came away with a 1 to 0 victory by playing errorfree defense behind a strong pitching performance by Atwood. Atwood struck out 10 Lady King batters and allowed only 4 hits, not more than one per inning. The Lady Oracles had base runners on base in all but one inning but were unable to push a run across home plate until the fifth inning when Carli Rouhier had a hard hit single and was advanced to third base by Atwood. Chanler Norman got the RBI on a line drive up the middle.
Vs. Clinton Central
The next night the Lady Oracles were home against the Clinton Central Lady Bulldogs. Atwood was again on the mound for the Lady Oracles who backed her up with excellent defense. The Bulldogs had only four hits for the evening, two in the first inning and two in the final fifth inning. The Oracle bats on the other hand exploded in the third when Jordyn Bieghler led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt my Lavy. The next five batters all safely went on until Kayser cleared the bases with her first home run of the year. The Oracles scored six runs in the third and four more in the fourth to win the game 10-0. Carli Rouhier had 5 RBIs in the game.
Vs. Rensselaer
Saturday morning the Lady Oracles traveled to Rensselaer for a conference double header and defeated the Lady Bombers 17-0 in the first game and 10-0 in the second.
These two games were dominated by the Oracle pitchers. In the first game Atwood pitched a perfect game, not a single Bomber reached base. Atwood threw ten strike outs, only five Bomber batters hit the ball, none out of the infield. The entire Lady Oracle team found its way to base at some point in the game, and all but one Oracle scored at least one run.
In the second game freshman Caitlin Schock got her first career start, also shutting out the Bombers and missing a perfect game of her own when one Bomber reached first base on an error. Schock faced only 16 batters in the five inning game, striking out 14 of them. The Oracle bats were again strong as again all the line up got on base at some time during the game. All but one of the RBIs in this game were recorded by the bottom half of the Oracle line up, with Danni Burge getting three of them. Aspen Wallace got the first Oracle triple of the year and drove in two runs.
The Lady Oracles will play three times this week with a Tuesday night game against Tri County, a Thursday night varsity/JV double header at West Lafayette and home double header against Benton Central at 10 Saturday morning.
