Public comments
In accordance with the new public comments policy adopted by the Delphi Community School Board, comments are taken at the beginning of the meeting before other agenda items.
All patron questions were not answered immediately. Some were addressed as the meeting progressed. Board president Robert Resler said questions not answered during the meeting would be "taken under advisement." He gave no indication when the questions would be discussed or when answers would be provided.
Superintendent Ralph Walker said Tuesday both he and the board intend to research questions not given answers in the board meetings and present the answers "as soon as possible" to those who posed the questions.
Questions posed Monday night were:
Camden resident Shawn Ashby asked what would happen if the state removed funding for vocational training. Principal Barry Stone said during his meeting presentation the removal of vocational education funding was not anticipated.
"If the state takes away vocational dollars, we're in big trouble," he said.
Walker said Tuesday the federal government appropriated vocational education funds for the next three years. He said after that it is unknown what will happen to the funding stream.
Ashby requested the board consider lowering the professional services costs for the elementary renovation project if bids are lower than expected.
Patron Everett Snoberger requested and received confirmation that CEEC is a separate entity from the elementary, middle and high schools. The staff report directly to the superintendent and not a principal.
Kirk Schwarzkopf urged the board to approve funds, or to give Walker authority to expend funds, to repair the hood ventilation system in the high school science wing. He said the instructor has requested on more than one occasion repairs be done because the situation is a "safety issue."
He noted money was spent on other activities and sports such as $807,000 for a new track, $33,000 for a new weight room and equipment plus $51,000 for a new gym heater.
No action was taken on the matter.
