Carroll hires elementary assistant principal
Roy Hufford of Warsaw will be the new assistant principal at Carroll Elementary next school year.
His hiring was approved at the April 7 Carroll School Board meeting.
Hufford currently teaches third grade at Milford Elementary School, Milford, Ind. He previously taught fifth grade. He also serves as oncall administrative intern at Madison Elementary in Warsaw. Hufford will become licensed as an administrator this summer.
After-prom discussion
In other business, the board discussed the after-prom, in general. The corporation is now recognizing the afterprom as a school event, which makes it subject to all rules and policies that apply to school-sponsored events and field trips. Previously, the after-prom was not considered a school event.
Rules that would apply to an after-prom trip, according to school attorney Miriam Robeson, are as follows:
• Adult chaperones required (one chaperone for every 10 students).
• If chaperones are not school personnel, they will have to go through a limited criminal history check (now required for all volunteers at the school).
• School buses and drivers will be used, and participating students will be required to go on the bus.
• All school discipline rules will apply.
Robeson said for an afterprom bus trip, students would be subject to a Breathalyzer test before boarding the bus. Any student who appeared impaired would be turned away.
There would be a permission slip for such a trip, and Robeson said particularly for an out-of-state trip, students and parents would have to sign a liability waiver.
All guests at the after-prom would have to abide by the same rules.
One of the field trip requests printed on the agenda was from teacher Melissa Keown. She was requesting permission to take students to Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom for the after-prom on May 3. Superintendent John Sayers said the board would set aside considering that request, because of a formality, but the field trip request could be resubmitted for the next meeting.
For the purpose of expanding its Internet access service, the board voted to sign a oneyear agreement with ENA, who will supply 45MB plus a T1 line to the Administration Building. The cost for the service will be $24,000 a year.
The corporation received eight bids for lawn care service. The board accepted the lowest bid, from Rob's Lawn Care, for $395 per mow for campus mowing and $170 per mow for the four athletic fields. High bid for the campus mowing was $995 per mow, and high bid for the athletic fields was $984.50 per mow.
Piping/AC project
Brian Walker from Barton- Coe-Vilamaa, Architects and Engineers, attended the meeting to discuss the six bids received for the piping/air conditioning project at the junior-senior high school.
"The bids came in a little higher than we had hoped," Walker said.
The board discussed the bids, possible cost-saving measures, and the possible impact on the Capital Projects Fund.
The board did not make a decision on the bids that night, but called a special meeting for April 13 to consider the bids again.
Two quotes for work in the gym and three purchases for the cafeterias, each with a cost exceeding $5,000, were approved.
Hammel Floor Service will sand and refinish the gym floor at the junior-senior high school at a cost of $14,995.
The Royal Painting Company will paint the walls in the gym for $5,800.
Both gym projects will be paid out of the Capital Projects Fund.
A steam kettle will be purchased for the junior-senior high school cafeteria from Great American Supply Co. for $10, 429.
At the elementary school cafeteria, a double oven will be purchased from C & T for $8,850 and an oven hood from Graves for $5,240.
The kettle, oven and hood will be paid out of the Cafeteria Fund.
In addition to other summer school courses announced at a previous board meeting, summer school band also will be offered.
Eight conference and field trip requests were approved.
The next regular board meeting will be April 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Administration Building.
