Canal Earth Day - Work Day is Saturday
A call-out is issued for volunteers to come to Project W.E.E.D. or Wabash & Erie Earth Day, beginning at 9 a.m. at Canal Park, Delphi. If it rains, the alternate date is April 25.
"In the past these Earth Day work days have attracted 50-75 volunteers of all ages. This year the goal is to top 100 workers," said organizer Dan McCain. "Groups like 4-H, Scouts, church groups, and individuals of all ages are invited. Children should work together with parents or teachers. Volunteer 'captains' will be on site to supervise specific jobs, and a work list will be available."
Some of the work will be in Canal Park and will include cleaning flowerbeds and landscaping.
The big jobs will be to extend the Monon High Bridge Trail and begin development of the Interurban railbed on the Pyle property in east Delphi. Workers will develop these connecting sections, dispose of trash, and remove a small old shed. This building is down in the Deer Creek bottoms below the Monon High Bridge Trail on the Gerard Nature Preserve owned by the preservation group NICHES.
The Wabash & Erie Canal Association sponsors the event with support from the USDA/NRCS Earth Team. Those wearing Earth Team white hats are designated as "captains" and will direct work and answer questions at the various sites.
"A work day can be a fun day and a chance to help the environment," McCain said.
Groups and individuals working that day should assemble by 9 a.m. at Canal Park for orientation before breaking into work groups for various sites.
"If you bring your own hand tools you will be given instructions and a map showing where to report for work," McCain said. "Mark your tools with your name before you come."
"Dress appropriately," he added. "Everyone should wear work clothes and shoes, gloves and other protective wear. No pets please."
Volunteers get a free lunch served at noon by the local Psi Iota Xi sorority.
