Carroll approves new courses
Carroll School Board approved adding new Project Lead the Way classes to its course curriculum at Carroll Jr.-Sr. High School, beginning next fall.
The recommendation by principal Charles Huckstep will add "Civil Engineering and Architecture" and "Human Body Systems."
Huckstep said this will be the third engineering class and second Biomed class in the Project Lead the Way offerings. The former will be taught by Tyler Sausaman, and the latter by Diane Goubeaux. Both are year-long classes and will be offered in addition to the other Project Lead the Way classes.
Huckstep said the school is receiving grants from the Department of Workforce Development to implement the two new classes. The grants are $15,000 for the engineering course and $20,000 for the Biomed course.
The board voted to keep the fee for driver's education the same as last year - $335. Superintendent John Sayers said the corporation receives no state aid for driver's ed, and last year's per-person fee did not completely pay for the cost of the program. He said there was a $2,000 deficit. Based on last year's enrollment in the course, Sayers said the corporation would have to charge $375 to break even. Because of the economy, the board didn't want to raise the fee, so the corporation will continue to subsidize the difference.
Besides driver's education, other summer school offerings will include: high school English, junior high English, integrated math I, integrated math II/III, pre-algebra, math 87, math 76, world history (first and second semester).
The offerings are contingent on having enough enrollment to fill the classes. Summer school will be May 28 to June 24 from 8 a.m. to noon.
The junior-senior high summer school will be held at the elementary school because of the HVAC project at the high school. The board officially accepted gifts to the corporation from Carroll Elementary PTO. Gifts for the 2008-2009 school year were: a kidneyshaped table, six LCD projectors and supplies, giant chess board and giant chess pieces, 12 graphire tablets, and numerous library books.
It was announced that the Carroll Schools Community Roundtable will be April 6 at 7 p.m. in the high school media center. Parents are invited to come and see what's happening at the schools.
The next regular school board meeting will be April 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the Administration Building.
