Busy week for DCMS swimmers

The Delphi Community Middle School swim team had a busy week competing in four meets. Last week in the battle for the county championship, Delphi came out on top with a score of 115-70.

For Delphi, 7th grader Cameron Burns had four firsts, Jeremie Kauffman, Laine Rader and Grant Price were double winners while Karli Edging, Shelbey Disinger, Jacob Chapman and Emma Carpenter each placed first.

For Carroll, Brian Bordner, Blake Claxton and Xavier Lewis were double winners and Brandon McCarty picked up a first.

In a rescheduled meet against Twin Lakes, the A team lost 85-101 while the B team won 110-60. Jacob Chapman picked up DCMS's A team's sole first place in diving. For the B team, Tanner Vaknin and Miranda Wright were triple winners, Addison Bradshaw, Lakin Hoss, Zack Taylor and Jack Gillam were double winners while Kayla Norman, Kayleen Baker, Emily Burwell and Kylie White each won.

On Thursday the DCMS A team beat Tecumseh 125-61. Burns, Kauffman and Rader were a triple winners, Chapman, Edging, Price and Haley Sales were double winners while Deserae Doremus and Taylor Hudelson each won.

Saturday at the Rensselaer Relays, Delphi was runner-up behind Twin Lakes for the second consecutive year. Delphi's 400 freestyle relay team of Kauffman, Emma Carpenter, Chapman and Burns not only won, it set a meet record with a time of 4:32.58, breaking last year's record set by another Delphi team of Annie Mose, Zack Thomas, Taylor Thompson and Brandon Wilson.

DCMS wrestlers take 2nd

Delphi Middle School wrestling team concluded its 2009 season at the WCJC on Saturday. Taking first place were Cody Miller, 110 lbs., and Alonzo Berumen, 180 lbs. Finishing second were Walker Alderman, 85lbs.; Kaleb Salyer, 125 lbs.; Andrew Taylor, 150 lbs.; and Bryer Houston, 160 lbs. Other placers were Adam Marvell 3rd, Jordan Cree 4th, Isaac Back 4th, Adam Clawson 4th, Grant Baker 5th, Brett Farrell 6th, Billy Hefner 6th, and Matthew Randle 6th.

The Oracles placed second overall and lagged behind Wainwright by 14 tournament points. Fourteen of the 16 wrestlers placed.

The sixth graders participated in the Frankfort Tournament with Ray Matthews taking first, and Josh Gilliam, second.

The middle school wrestlers finished the season at 13-2.

Compete in state finals

Two Delphi Community Elementary students competed in the ISWA Folkstyle wrestling state finals Sunday in Indianapolis. Both wrestlers brought home medals in their respective weight classes. Fourth grader Dylan Hart placed 8th in the Novice 90 lb. weight class while fifth grader Coy Cronk placed fourth in the Novice 120 lb. weight class.

The wrestlers were coached by Clay Hart and Kameron Banes at the state finals.

Carroll wrestlers compete

Five first-year members of the Carroll Wrestling Club participated Sunday in the Tipton Beginners Open. All five finished within the top three places.

Leading the team was four-year old Tanner Turnpaugh, who had an outstanding day with four wins by pin and finishing as champion. Also finishing as champion was Dagan Noonkester, who won his first round by 1 point, avenging a loss to a former opponent, followed by his first win by pin. In the championship round, Noonkester pulled out a sudden death overtime victory by take down. Brandon Gasser (C160), who recorded the fastest pin of the day in 39 seconds, finished in second place. Brothers Cody (I55) and Corey Hayes finished in second and third place, respectively, each with a single pin on the day.

Next week the CCWC will be participating in the ISWA state competition at Huntington North High School.
