Michael Todd Martin, 32, and Nathan L. Toomey, 29, both of Lafayette, have been arrested and charged with burglary and other offenses following a break-in in Tecumseh Bend.

At 6:37 a.m. March 8, Master Trooper Bill Brooks and Probationary Trooper Wendell Beachy were sent to assist Carroll County Deputy John Chapman with a burglary in progress at 11652 West Tecumseh Bend in Carroll County. Chapman already had Martin in custody, along with the suspected vehicle used in the burglary, a 2008 gray Toyota. The second suspect had fled the scene on foot.

Toomey was found in the front seat of a vehicle driving by the original location. The car was stopped by Brooks, Beachey, and Department of Natural Resources Officer Todd Peckney. The driver stated he had given Toomey a ride after he found Toomey lying along the roadway with his clothes soaking wet and showing signs of hypothermia. Toomey advised Trooper Brooks that when he ran from the scene, he fell into the water and lost the shotgun he had been carrying. Toomey told police he was in the water for awhile when he was able to grab a tree branch and rescue himself.

Toomey is being charged with felony counts of possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, burglary, theft, and possession of stolen property, and being an habitual offender.

Martin is being charged with felony counts of aiding and abetting a criminal and possession of stolen property, as well as being an habitual offender.

Additional charges are pending with both suspects as the investigation continues.
