Local MCC ag students excel
Two Carroll County students, Nathan Trapp of Flora and Mark Minnicus of Delphi, were among the 26 Muscatine Community College (MCC) Agribusiness & Technology students who recently attended the Postsecondary Agricultural Students of Iowa (PAS) spring conference in Ankeny, Iowa.
The MCC Crop specialist team placed second with Trapp placing second individually. Each participant had to individually complete a 100 question multiple choice exam, identify pest and field situations using 50 slides and as a team, had to solve a complex cropping system problem using data from herbicide labels, nutrient recommendations, and other agronomic information. Certified crop consultants from central Iowa evaluated the team event.
Career Progress is a student activity based on developing a 13-page research paper to learn more about specific segments of the agricultural industry. Participants are evaluated on goal setting, competency development and developing an application on how to become successful. Minnicus placed first in Ag Management & Marketing and Trapp was first in Crop Production. In the Job Interview portion, Minnicus and Trapp also placed first in their divisions.
They will represent MCC at the PAS National conference in Hershey, Pa., in March.
